For Halloween Audio Contest 2011

A happy birthday shout out goes to: Masashi Hamauzu! (what a coincedence I'd end up uploading this piece today!)

Yay! A new milestone in my music life! This song was developed in GarageBand and mix/mastered in FL Studio 10 (da' demo, sucka!).

This song's been on my mind for some time when I first came across the AMG House Delay piano (I LOVE the "back-in-the-day" synth sound it has). After hitting keys with it for a few secs, the song popped in my mind, or at least really a sketch of it.

I never really went into much detail as to making it...until today! There are a few things about the sound that I really wanted to iron out, but I guess its listenable for now (mainly really hearing the high notes, and taking care of reducing the hum at the end).

Some reason today, I think the man upstairs wanted me to use FL Studio, while I was in the midst of mastering in GB. So I completed the song within a little over an hour (with one minute before the battery would die, as I didn't bring the adapter with me to my work space) then "shipped" it over to FL Studio for the last few steps (done in the order as thegaragedoor suggested, like saving the EQ for last).

I really just dabbled around with the limiter and the multi-band compressor, until I thought It sounded okay, though I barely understood what I was doing. Then I fell into confusion as to how I could tame the bass a bit and really bring up the highs that well in the EQ. I optimized the sound as best as I could understand, as I know this could sound better.

If anyone with a background in either DAW has an idea as to what I should use to better improve the sound of the piece, please let me know.

Thanks for listening!

P.S. I kind of thought about lyrics for this song, but in the end didn't really think of any. This song's dedicated to everyone out there with the name John, or Jon, or something like that.

In all honesty though, I did try to have the piano kind of "sing" in the last four bars: "I am a piano...My name is John".

Note: because the synth has an octave leap in it (G# past middle C), I had to be really creative how I transitioned to other parts of the song. I think it actually made for a nicer piece in the end.

Hmm, I guess I need to go watch more episodes of that series, to get the gist of what you mean,

pretty cool

not exactly my style, but it's pretty good. very dark and... ominous perhaps? yet strangely.... interesting. not sure how to describe this one actually 0.o

FaeryTaleAdventurer responds:

That's perhaps one of the reasons I liked this soundfont. It's richness in its darkness, to perhaps being somewhere underground, like a sewer or cave. I thought about keeping it mostly dark, by hanging around in the lower octaves, but as I was making it, I felt that it needed some brightness to it, to give it a melancholy feel at best.

Good to know that it has a mysterious feel to it.
