I really would like to go back and witness how they produced that Motown sound. I think I'm on the right track though. By listening to the great artists of that era, todays music producers can learn so much just by listening. I think the more music you listen to somehow tunes your ears to make the right decisions in your own music. As an excercise, I willI frequently rip a 30 second clip and import it to be used as a template. Using my ears, I will hear the elements and one by one create a VST instrument patch for them. I try to emulate what I am hearing in the clip until I I get it right. For PC musicians, I recommend this method. Lots of stops and starts but a sure way to get your software sequencer to respond to what you are hearing.
