Pensive (Piano Improv)

Ironically I made this piece of music just before my keyboard broke! It has a specific melancholic feel to it, as though thinking of past memories, dreams, hopes, wishes, desires.. it can be repeated infinitely as you wish, perhaps to accompany you as you think.

I've searched for a long time to get some really sad pieces I could use for a visual novel and this is by far the best one I could find. I'll definitely check out other works from you because this song is really beautiful. Most listeners don't care about technique, they care about the songs and what they express. I see the description "slow", "thoughtful" and "sad" in many pieces, but this one finally really sounds like that. Great work.

MrMusicalLion responds:

Thankyou. I'm glad that you found this piece of music, it doesn't surprise me that many other pieces fail to live up to what they claim to be. It is a rare thing for music to be truly felt, it is typically made with vain ambition rather than genuine desire to express.

Thanks :)

Good Piano

I assumed you played this rubato? It's my favorite technique, not being limited to a iron steady tempo. Rules like tempos are meant to be only loosely followed during free piano improvisation. I love how you played according to feel rather than tempo.

MrMusicalLion responds:

Howdy :) Yeah I play according to how I feel, when I improv everything I feel, think, experience, it all feeds back into the music, keeps it more alive that way and makes the listener feel a part of the music rather than just an observer, I find :)

Thanks for listening and the review :D Nice to hear someone who appreciates such a technique, you'd probably like Chopins Raindrop Prelude or perhaps his Op 10 n3 [youtube it, so worth it if you can find a decent recording]

So short

I find this tune to be evocative and gentle on the brain.

The dynamics are superb and it has a lot of feeling from the artist. Great work.

Please fix your keyboard so that we can hear the reset...:)

MrMusicalLion responds:

Lol yeah I was pretty mad when my keyboard broke.. >.< For now, the only thing to do is to put it on repeat.. fortunately it can loop, kind of. But it's still not how I wanted it to be. I'm hoping it will be fixed by next week, fingers crossed :)

If you want another piece to think to .. check out.. Rebound.. on my youtube channel :)
Thankyou :)

So much emotion in the playing..

I love the contemplative feel of this. It baffles me that highly skilled musicians like you aren't rated higher on NG.
While from a technical playing standpoint this song isn't as impressive as your other song I reviewed (Spirited Steed), it is nonetheless extremely well composed, with again a great use of dynamics and a great deal of emotion put into the playing, which is where this track really shines ultimately. Lots of people can play piano, but few are able to convey emotion without it sounding boring or contrived.

I just wish this was longer! 1:33 is way too short :(

Please keep making stuff like this, you are very, very talented!

MrMusicalLion responds:

Ah yeah it is way too short, I totally agree, my keyboard actually broke whilst playing this xD Which sucks. I'll try and do another version sometime, when I fix my 'playing keyboard' [I have one for playing and one for composing.. the playing one broke..]

Thanks for the other review too, much appreciated :) When I play piano pieces like this, although it may not be technically skilled, it requires a lot of attention to precise pedalling and also, as you say, dynamics.

I promise I'll make a longer version of this sometime, as you can probably hear, the music was going somewhere at the end but cut short because my keyboard decided that it was time to die xD

As for being higher rated, well, I haven't been uploading stuff here for long, so let's see ;)

edit: Also, I totally agree with this statement: 'Lots of people can play piano, but few are able to convey emotion without it sounding boring or contrived.' I tend to listen to most other pianists and .. I find myself coming back feeling like I've eaten something that is half-cooked or burnt.

Thankyou again!

this is excellent! :) it deserves way more recognition...

MrMusicalLion responds:

Hey thanks man, I realize it's not perfect [my keyboard literally busted before I got a chance to run through it again.. ] but I'm glad you got to listen to it! And I hope it does get more recognition :) thankyou again.
