Celtic Overture
You definitely need an instrument with more attack for the lead. That string instrument that you used sounds like it would be more suited towards rhythm. The second lead instrument was better, but had a lot of vibrato built into its sustained sound.
When the song broke into full orchestra, that was AWESOME. Better strings and horns, but still a tad cheesey due to the fake sounding nature. But still, I love half of this song, when it broke into full sound, that was great. I liked the pleasant undertone of light percussion, good job there. Very Irish sounding and definitley belongs in the realm of folk music.
Overall: This song met the criteria of the contest and fits well in the folk music genre.
8.2 .

Ikus responds:

Yup, the full orchestra section was the first part, and my favorite part, that I had written for that piece. Overall, after doing spots here and there for a few weeks I found myself cramming in the final few days trying to finish and overlooking some major details when it came to the production of it. Thanks for the review!

Hmm.. It's nice.. the overall volume is a bit low though.. however I am contantly waiting for it to truly break out into an epic collaboration.. around 1:16 it starts to get into a wonderful almost foresty sounding tune.. still.. I feel this is a bit lacking.. I think it could use more percussion.. maybe some timpanis in the bg - I heard some back there but they were BARELY audible. 2:20 I feel kind of tried to make it sound like.. something from a 90s epic fantasy series.. like.. hercules haha.

Overall I feel it had great potential.. but it fell short of my expectations. I also felt near the end you sort of became undecisive as to what mood you wanted it to have. I think with a little more work, improving of percussion and adding more variation of instruments but keeping the feel consistant all throughout you will have yourself a more solid piece.

Overall needs more work!

Ikus responds:

Yeah, I definitely feel more inexperienced when it comes to audio rather than composition. But that's what I'm on NG to learn to do! Normally I would just rehearse my ensemble and tell them what they need to do to make it sound like I want... now I just need to figure out how I'm going to tell these things to my computer :) Thanks for the review!

At first, I thought it was rather boring, but as it builds up, it's getting pretty cool, definitly sounds celtic from the start though. The synth strings and instruments you used were pretty weak and there were some very odd notes here and there, with unexpected velocity (attack strength) which were distracting. I still think that overall that composition is great and very celtic. I just wish you had worked more on your instruments.

Ikus responds:

Thanks! This piece was done with Finale, so I'm definitely in transition when it comes to the quality of the audio production and moving beyond writing out tons of measures. I really had that working against me when the production was the focus.

Love it

The current score does not do this song justice! People are totally low-balling you -- probably because it's in a competition. This composition is REALLY good. :)
