I had an hour to go and practice my jury piece on marimba the other day, but it turned out that the studio was occupied and I couldn't practice. Instead, I went to the piano rooms and wrote this.

Lately I've been trying to write things that are pretty complex, I figured that maybe it was time to go back to some minimalistic ambience for a breather. I intend to record a longer, higher-quality version of this as soon as I can nab some time in the recording studio.

This would probably go well in a number of film atmospheres...

Goodness, yes

I like it a lot. very nice beginning, calm and well-balanced. Love the touches of piano. Please make it longer. ;)

ObsidianSnow responds:

haha alright, I'll consider making it longer. Thanks for the review, Asaaj. :)

I actually really like this...

...a lot more than the more complex jazz piece you made. That's not to say it was bad, but I guess there were too many things going in that one for my personal taste. It doesn't need to be complex to be good, this simple ambience really does a better job of creating a solid, easily perceived "mood". In this case, just as your name suggests, it gives the feeling of solitude, loneliness, I can almost picture the scene in my head of the main character wandering a dark, abandoned world. Ruined buildings and streets, rain gently falling from a cloud-covered sky, signs of life that existed before but none to be found now. It's quite inspiring, and I'd love to use this in one of my games or stories someday. Keep it up!

ObsidianSnow responds:

It's amazing how little you have to do to provoke a human emotion. This is a perfect example - one note, repeated, and a few occasional chords... and suddenly you have an audible emotion.

Thanks for the review, Thaedos.
