I'll tell you a story, it's old, but it's new
There once was a creature that looked much like you
He brought down a deer across African plains
As he dragged it home, the sky started to rain

And it rained and it poured with a thunderous roar
And a brush fire chased him to the river's shore
And he dropped his dead dinner as he ran away
And he promised himself that he'd find it next day

(REFRAIN) We've fought against Nature with writing and reading
With science, religion, technology, dreaming
That we can evolve, but in ways of our choosing
Until we've designed our own fate

Next day he went searching and what should he smell
But the glorious scent of a roasted gazelle
And since that day forward, we've harnessed the flame
For warmth and for light and for food and for pain

Millennia later, combustion is used
In power plants, car engines, factories too
Our tools they define us, our comforts confine us
So we'd best remain grateful to where they come from

Computers, the Internet, cell phones, sky scrapers
Radio, airplanes, hot showers, loud speakers
We've thought of it all, but if we want to make it
Let's take good care of the Earth from which we take it

I'll tell you a story
I'll tell you a story
I'll tell you a story...of today.
