My best song yet, or at least according to my friends. Maybe Racing Through Eternity is better, maybe not, but here's just a preview of what you'll possibly be hearing in a few weeks. Maybe it's unwise to post a Work in Progress on a song which I'm doing really well in, but oh well, I couldn't resist uploading it...

This uses a hell of a lot of instruments, so I don't know if I'll remember them all, but all of the classical instruments, i.e., the brass and strings, along with a reverse cymbal and tambourine, are from East/West Symphonic Orchestra Silver. Then, uh, there's a plucked bass and a dance bass which I made with Sytrus, a saw wave from z3ta+ and a saw wave I made with Vanguard, a sweep using noise from P8 Superwave, some turntable scratches I found, and drum samples I downloaded... I think that's all of them.

This song isn't particularly complicated; a relatively simple structure and not many effects either, plus the mastering could use work (WARNING: the song can get rather loud at times, I'm working on that), but the song has a story behind it. In the song, you'll see that the genre gradually moves from classical with a drum kit to more electronic genres such as club, techno and trance. This is because I imagined some hero running after a villain, using time machines and stuff to fast-forward through time. This is like some epic time-travel chase, which starts in the present, but gradually moves on to the future when more electronic and modern genres come in. Sure, the story is nothing special, but I think the song is probably one of my best so far. With probably my catchiest melody, my most original concept, probably my best transitions and my best blend of different instruments, I think this is probably the best I'll make in a long while, and heck, it's still a WiP.

I really enjoyed making this so far. Sure, I worked hard on it, but I probably enjoyed making this song more than I enjoyed making my other songs. Thanks to aliaspharow, Darklight17 and rcvtk for listening to it and giving me feedback, and thanks to aliaspharow for being awesome and giving me some really helpful advice and criticism. This song was never actually intended to be like this; actually I was trying to make a Dance song without using any synths or dance drum kits, but as I went on, I experimented by adding a bass and turntable scratching, and I said to myself 'Wow that actually sounds really good' and slowly the concept of the song gradually becoming more modern as the main character delves deeper into the future slowly became what it is now. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this work in progress, I'm planning on moving to a new direction and making some spacey trance or something, but if any of you have any ideas, I'll really appreciate hearing them ^^.

Also, I know the song clips and there are a few slightly rough transitions like the transition from the part at the beginning to the part where the kick and bass comes in with the staccato brass, but other than that, I think this is pretty decent for a work in progress ^^. Thanks for listening, and remember that I respond to all reviews and review back if your review is helpful (and trust me, my review will be enormous and guaranteed to be larger than yours no matter what). Sorry for the long authors comments... Enjoy the song!

Yes

Another work in progress which is turning out quite nicely. Most of it is really well done but there are a few things which didn't sit right for me.

The synths sound pretty decent and the beats are nice and crisp sounding, which is the main problem. The synths create a sort of reverberation effect so it sounds like they're behind the beat. I do like the way they sound together, so maybe if there's way to sync them better you could try it. It's not much but to me it would make this sound really cool.

Everything else was good. The tune was catchy, the break in the middle was really good, and most of things after the break, the exception being the syncing, was pretty awesome. The synth effect at :46 up to the break was probably the best part for me. Nothing there has to be changed for me. The intro was also strong and a good way to start this.

Overall a very good start to a potentially amazing song, just work on the syncing a bit. Nice work!

Wow, you're reviewing more of my songs? Dude I have to find some sort of way to repay you O.o.

You're not the first to complain about the off-sync synths. I don't know if it's the reverb effect, but the VST I'm using (East/West) is a bit glitchy on a fail computer like mine and does all sorts of stuff like cuts notes off, reboots my computer, makes notes off-sync, etc... So yeah, unless I get a new computer, I don't think I can fix it :P.

Awesome. I tried to make 0:46 sounds like the orchestral influences are getting pushed away more and more by the techno influences. I'm glad you like that part :D.

Thanks again! Glad you like this, I'll be working my ass off for a few days and finish all my WiP's, you watch :P.

Woah!

At first I thought, this was just an amzing epical song with strings an' stuff, your usual, long story short.
First of all the strings were heroic, epical and what-not, the low and high, both combining to ligh, or how :P
The melody was very good, I enjoyed listening to it throughout the whole song because it's very catchy.
The drums, amazing, the percussion choice was brilliant, now those are patterns!!!
The patterns were good because as far as I can hear, they were not generic, because generics suck :P
The brass was excellent because it fit in with the whole hero theme but still stayed subtle although rockin out.
The melodies of the brass were also quite good, which is.....good :P
The techno.......
The bass was amazing, it was very cool and actually BLENDED with the song.
The only problem was that the bass was a bt distorted.....
Then came in the sqaure solo, bassline square i think.........
Anyway, all in all this was very good, I cannot believe this, this must have taken a lot of effort and thinkin'

P..S you might have noticed I'm on a mission to review and critique all of your songs, if you could return the favour, I wouldn't say no :P
Thx

"At first I thought, this was just an amzing epical song with strings an' stuff, your usual, long story short."

So epic is the usual with me? Yay :D.

"First of all the strings were heroic, epical and what-not, the low and high, both combining to ligh, or how :P"

You lost me at combining.

"The melody was very good, I enjoyed listening to it throughout the whole song because it's very catchy."

The melody is very simple, but seems to work I suppose ^^. Thanks.

"The drums, amazing, the percussion choice was brilliant, now those are patterns!!!"

Percussion was alright IMO, but the kick can be bassier and more 'whoa'-ish.

"The patterns were good because as far as I can hear, they were not generic, because generics suck :P"

It's weird. It's my first attempt at making generic techno drums and yet nobody calls them generic. How nice :D.

"The brass was excellent because it fit in with the whole hero theme but still stayed subtle although rockin out."

I love brass :3.

"The melodies of the brass were also quite good, which is.....good :P"

You already told me my melodis were good, but whatever, the more compliments the better, lol.

"The techno......."

Yes, the techno :3.

"The bass was amazing, it was very cool and actually BLENDED with the song."

Thank you ^^. I never actually thought I could actually pull of putting a rough saw wave along with orchestral instruments, but heck, looks like I need a self-esteem boost.

"The only problem was that the bass was a bt distorted....."

It can't be distorted man. I added no distortion, and it's simply a bunch of raw and slightly detuned saw waves. The whole song, on the other hand, is distorted. Working on it.

"Then came in the sqaure solo, bassline square i think........."

It's not a square, I forgot what I did to make it...

"Anyway, all in all this was very good, I cannot believe this, this must have taken a lot of effort and thinkin'"

To be honest, this came rather naturally to me. I was surprised and while I was doing it, I was thinking 'whoa, how am I doing this'.

"P..S you might have noticed I'm on a mission to review and critique all of your songs, if you could return the favour, I wouldn't say no :P"

Perhaps I might consider thinking about it, maybe :P.

Thanks for all the reviews and good luck on your mission xD.

Awww it ended

It may be simple but it's definitely a fun listen. I can see what you envisioned with the whole time traveling thing. Although being a Doctor Who fan it sort of distorts that vision a bit for me but that doesn't matter. What you have here is quite excellent so far. You need to finish this! Just fix some of the volume issues and balance everything out and you'll have such an amazing song here. Great job.

Step responds:

Heh, thanks, this comment really made my day :). Thanks for giving me the encouragement to finish this; currently I have loads to do including a lot of people who I owe reviews to, updating the Review Request Club, making music for a film company, a game and 2 flash artists, making a song for Robot Day and obviously RL things, so it's really hard to find a time where I say "Hmm, what to do next?" lol.

Whatever, I complain too much xP. Thanks for the awesome review man, I totally agree with you on the balancing and volume stuff, it's probably the main thing which needs fixing in this song, although if you check, you'll see that all of my recent WiP's have horrible mixing and EQing. I tend to do all that after the song is finished, not while I'm doing it :P. Thanks again!

Dude nice!

Wow, everyone's right, this is pretty much your best track - and not just cuz you added synths lol. I love this quite a bit! There's a lot going on here (much like my dubstep song lol =P). I love how this song opens; it's just epic, and then adding that DnB drum track made it all that much sweeter. And then you add scratching? Nice! The melody progression is also great, and your transitions are essentially flawless. The synths are so fat dude, just wow; when most people try to mess with these sounds, it comes out cheesy, but you nailed it as far timbre goes man! I commend you on that. The few weak points in the song, though, are in the overall EQing; I feel that your kick overcompensated for my "weak" one lol, it's so punchy that it just takes over the mix in places. There's also a lot of sound towards the end, and it contributes to this somewhat overall muddy, distorted tone. Structurally, I think you coulda carried out the ending a little further too; I was expecting this epic outtro, and it just ended short of where my ear wanted it to. But, the track is still very good, much better overall than anything else I've heard you make! It's like Mortal Kombat on crack dude! Haha. But anyway, it's good man, and the blend of both classical and electronica elements makes it all the more unique; make more stuff this complex, and you'll be at the top of the NG artists for sure!

Haha thanks man! I'm not sure whether this or Racing Through Eternity would be my best, but thanks for the compliments!

"I love how this song opens; it's just epic, and then adding that DnB drum track made it all that much sweeter."

Yeah :D.

"And then you add scratching? Nice!"

Lol, the scratching was the only thing I added which persuaded me to turn this into a techno song. At first I was like "Nah, I'm doing so well with Classical instruments and a drum kit, why turn it into techno?? Although I can just try out scratching just for fun..." and then I tried it, and I liked it, so I continued it as techno xD.

"The melody progression is also great, and your transitions are essentially flawless."

Thanks man. I think the transition from the first part to techno could use some work, but I'm glad you liked my transitions :).

"The synths are so fat dude, just wow; when most people try to mess with these sounds, it comes out cheesy, but you nailed it as far timbre goes man! I commend you on that."

Yeah, that was my exact intention when I was making the techno song. I was using generic synths, so I tried my best to make sure it won't come out cheesy.

"The few weak points in the song, though, are in the overall EQing; I feel that your kick overcompensated for my "weak" one lol, it's so punchy that it just takes over the mix in places. There's also a lot of sound towards the end, and it contributes to this somewhat overall muddy, distorted tone."

I totally agree with you regarding EQing. This is a WiP, and I tend to EQ everything towards the end of producing a song (I just solo each instrument I need to EQ and EQ each one individually) so that's why there's a significant amount of distortion and mud in the mix.

"Structurally, I think you coulda carried out the ending a little further too; I was expecting this epic outtro, and it just ended short of where my ear wanted it to."

Yeah I think that I'll add a break after the part at the end, and it turns into some trance.

"But, the track is still very good, much better overall than anything else I've heard you make! It's like Mortal Kombat on crack dude! Haha. But anyway, it's good man, and the blend of both classical and electronica elements makes it all the more unique; make more stuff this complex, and you'll be at the top of the NG artists for sure!"

Great, thanks a bunch man! I'm usually more of a Trailerscore/Classical person, but heck, it's my first proper techno song, so I may as well make it original :P. Thanks for the epic review, you never cease to impress as always :D.

Good attempt...

It's quite a good attempt... especially when you need to build on it.

Some Improvements might be:

Use more the Orchestra instruments with the bass, and with the techno stuff. It would surely blend well.

Make a climax to the song. In this way, your song would sound more "interesting".

In general it's quite a good song. Keep working steph... if you want i can then help you... you know how..

Step responds:

Yeah this was a bit of an experiment, so I agree with you on those suggestions. I'm also thinking of adding the climax, yeah.

Thanks for the review, and SUBMIT SOME STUFF NAO!!! XD
