If you look up pleonasm, it makes no sense, but it sounds cool.

I'm trying to get to the point where I can make mainstream-ish trance/techno/dnb. Any of the three are fine with me. What genre am I closest to with this? (I think trance) What am I missing from it? Reviews greatly appreciated.

After listening through to this a few times, I think it's safe to say what this is missing...and that'd be a melody. To be brutally honest, this feels like a track that accidentally had the lead part muted when you were exporting it out of your DAW. You've got a really solid foundation for a track here, but it feels like everything's been placed in the background ready for some melody line that just isn't there. I think just adding in any kind of melody for the first two minutes would really bring this track up on every point.

Failing that, you need to bring one of the synths further into the foreground to act more like a lead synth, because everything's pretty quiet and distant so it feels incomplete. No more so than the drums, which are so distant you can barely hear them. The beat it's playing is also pretty basic, it definitely could have done with a more complex part to play.

It's a pretty laid back, relaxing track, but it needs more to it just to bring the variation up more, because as it is it doesn't really go anywhere for more of it, and its only right at the end where the arpeggiated synth gets louder that it starts sounding like a real track.

The mixing's pretty good and the production's alright, but you should really consider adding in a strong melody line in this just to flesh it out a little more. You've got the scenery, now add the foreground.

Cool...

I liked the song, the instruments are pretty good, and the back drums really fitted with the song's context, I liked the way you builded the song, the arp was pretty cool, and together withe the other instruments, the song gets cooler...

The song was very nice, pretty relaxing, but you didn't variated, what is bad, since it's a great song, with a nice melody, you have numerous ways to variate this song... But, anyways, the song is very cool, too bad the lenght is short and the song is repetitive... But, you have potential, keep it up, guy, I wanna listen more from you!!!

Not that great

-It's very weak as a whole. It never rose up and did anything spectacular. It only just caught my attention in the last thirty seconds with an almost melody. Mentioning that there isn't a solid melody throughout which it really needed. The drums are very light and repetitive. They need to be brought out more to have any sort of effect.

Not bad.

This one's OK as a basic idea but you could do a lot of things to make it more interesting. At the moment it sounds like a backing track, you are definitely in need of a main melody or a vocal. The track is alright as it is now but it's not very inspiring.

The drums are distorting like mad. That needs to be fixed big time. It's pretty low in the mix so I guess you're driving the kick drum part into clipping with gain and then you've brought the level down in the mix rather than reducing the gain. There's a bit during the build after the 1:30 where the arpeggios come in again where as the other parts fade back in, you lose volume on the kick. I don't know if this is intentional but it sounds a little strange.

You have to change the drum groove up a little in places by programming in some breaks as it gets a little boring listening to the same rhythm the whole time. I would also consider changing your chord sequences around a bit. I do like the feel of the piece generally but it sounds unfinished at the moment and needs more work on the melodic parts. I do like the sweep on the arpeggio at the beginning but it's not enough to hold my interest throughout the whole piece.

Drums need to be improved

From the sounds of things you're using a kick sample combined with FPC assuming you're using FL, all I can say is, it'd be better if it was either a sliced drumloop or if the kick was mastered to be less bassy. I mean you have the bass synth going and it makes the kick unhearable. So probably bring the kick up, EQ it so that it doesn't get overpowered by the bass.

Also you need a different melody because I think I heard the arp for the whole song and it was playing the same melody the whole time. Probably add another melody starting 2:12 during the climax, like a synth solo. And also during like 1:45 another melody alongside the arp thing would be nice.
