So this is about the 4th time I've gone back on this song to fix problems, and everytime it gets a little bit better. I've extended it a bit longer at the end too. Probably going to go back and make a better transition to the extension.

Please... please review, and be harsh about it. I'm having trouble picking out issues, because it's my own work... and that's the problem with artists... where they get a "block"

Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy version 4 of Generic Dance Song 3

And please vote fairly :)

Edit: I have made it the theme to my Team Fortress 2 clan's MOTD page, so you can check it out there too :)

Steven-Polley responds:

It does have the same progression.... but, I made this song before that song came out :D

but in my honest opinion, does not deserve best of all time (at least, when i wrote this comment, thats where this song ranked)

Since you asked...

Really catchy! I love the transitions between different parts of the song, as well as each part. I never got bored listening to this. That's the problem with a lot of techno - the artist hits on one winning melody, and you listen to it forever and get bored.

As for criticism, I disliked the section from about 1:29-1:50. It felt choppy and empty - perhaps a smooth layer with long notes in the back would help fill in the space and connect the higher, isolated notes.

The transition from this section back into another part around 1:50-54 was rough. It just kinda petered out... and the next section just came in. Break it off more dramatically, or smooth it out.

From about 2:19-2:21 I heard a really cool effect sweep in and then fade away. It came back again right towards the end. It sounds really awesome! If you are going to extend the song further, I would definitely play around with that as the melody. You could also use it to fill in the empty space I mentioned earlier.

I look forward to more!

True, this song does have a lot repeat elements, but I did try and change it up while still keeping the same progression.

1:29 - 1:50... perhaps I could do some cuts in the mids and have a gated pad or something... or would that make it worse because you feel as though it's choppy?

1:50-1:54... That's originally where the song had ended, but I decided to extend it a bit, and yes, I did in fact get lazy with a transition and merely brought out waveshaper and scratched a string sample lol. It lacks depth, but it was a good place holder, definitely keeping this in mind for V5 (if I get around to it)

2:19-2:21... You're either talking about a filtered supersaw or the crash delay chain. If it's the supersaw, theres no way I could use it in 1:29-1:50. The problem with it is that it's TOO full... and would dominate other parts of the mix that I feel really do need to stand out, such as the piano and side-chained high saw.

Thank you very much for the review, definitely makes me reconsider a few things for when I come back to this :)

this is really good :)
