Ode to Madness

"A person needs a little madness, or else they never dare cut the rope and be free"
-- Nikos Kazantzakis

I wanted to give this song a feeling of insanity but also a form of twisted hope. I didn't want to play madness as a soundscape of sound effects or extreme dissonance, but rather wanted to give a musical feeling to the isolation and solitude of insanity. Sort of a liberation through madness, which is why I chose the quote above. I would really like to hear some opinions, so feel free to review this as harshly as you like.

Thank you.

It gives me a dark feeling like the darker side so to say but that madness part is missing (liberation throught madness ok but i cant help but feel something is missing from this piece cant put my finger to it).
Btw
Madness can also be chaos.

popraz responds:

Thank you ! I appreciate the review.

Nice work!

After listening to this a couple times, I have been able to create a good spot in madness for this. This would be a great intro part to a series. The main character is sitting in a cell, looking out the window, remembering the past before he/she got put in there. this music would be playing during the screen shots of past events leading up to this point. Then, an unknown person comes and opens the cell, releasing the main character. So that they can exact revenge on whoever put them in there. Really nice work my friend, hopefully this will make it into a series soon. It would fit perfectly.

popraz responds:

Thank you. Glad you liked it. Loved the story you came up with. Sounds pretty close to what I imagined when I made this song, except for the revenge bit. I wish I had thought of that.

Not quite there.

You aimed for a little madness, and got psychosis instead. This piece contains nothing of the uplifting meaning behind the quote, nor any feeling of liberation.

Rather, it contains the dark side of madness, the kind where you sit in a cell, locked away from humanity for your dangerous nature. You nailed the isolation feeling, and the sense of madness. But it is not the liberating kind that perhaps you should have been after.

That would have been achieved through a faster tempo, a more upbeat tune, and a number of different melodies running in different time signatures. Perhaps even counter melodies. A sort of jarring Tom and Jerry style music, full of bright sound and demented laughter.

At least, that how I would have interpreted that quote.

Your piece conveyed the feeling, and would work perfectly in a film. But it didn't quite meet what you were aiming for, and as a soundscape, it won't have the same impact a melody would.

Nevertheless, excellent piece. Keep on making music!

popraz responds:

Well I was aiming to blend madness and liberation within the same musical structure, without switching tempo or tone. I do see your point. Perhaps if this was actually part of a film or a more elaborate body of work, I could have given the concept a bit more nuance. Thank you for reviewing !

insane at best

i picture someone sitting in a cell rocking back and forth, but then they see a beam of light through a crack in the wall.

awesome track

Cool song. I don't normally give this genre a listen so I don't know how to be helpful, but everything sounds cool from my perspective. Really dark and brooding. I heard some digital clipping in there. I'd recommend turning down some of the louder levels in there that are doing that. If your not familiar with the term clipping, it's basically just digital distortion. It's that popping sound you hear when the levels peak. That would probaly be the only negative thing I have to say about this mix. Great melodies and sounds! Peace sir :)

popraz responds:

Yes, I noticed the clipping too, but i thought it was just my headphones being really old and faulty. I usually keep a low volume level so I'm not sure exactly why I got distortions. But now that it's officialy an issue, I'm going to have to look into it, maybe I missed something. Thank you very much for reviewing.
