I wrote this song and recorded a few months ago(I need to get a new recording setup to get all the random noises and static out of the song, plus a new microphone). I'm sick of all these new bands being labelled grunge, yet they have sickly sweet singing and a polished sound - so in this song, I got drunk, snarled the lyrics and sticked to a simple 4 chord pattern.

The song is a tongue in cheek look at the glory days of grunge: slacking, checkered shirts and rebellion. I used the cliché quiet/loud intro as well. I wanted this to be my "grunge anthem", and I think it turned out OK, but of course I need other people's views.

This is still in demo stages (some timing is a bit off among other things) so I know that there are some kinks to be worked out. I intend to add bass, vocals and drums at some point and try to get the song sounding the best it can, but it's time consuming when you're just one guy using N-Track Studio to record multiple guitars, vocals etc.

Hope you like it, please be constructive not harsh when criticising. Thanks!

Lyrics:
Reckless Youth, no intent
Got no money to pay the rent
Reckless Youth, where did you go?
The days drift by so slow

What did you learn today?
How to speak up and have your say?
What did you learn today?
How to tell us that you're not OK?

Reckless Youth, why the greed?
Happiness in the things you need
Reckless Youth, full of grief
Always changing your beliefs

What did you learn today?
Lie and cheat with no delay
What did you learn today?
You'll forget it all anyway

Meh.

You DID say this was a demo, which i'm thankful for, cuz if you hadn't specified that i woulda been a little... scared. As stated before, this DOES have potential... The vocals are a bit weird with the flanger-sounding FX and the guitar drowns out the vocals. otherwise i say that you could go REALLY far with this song.

SwampWater responds:

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it and I'm working really hard and investing a good bit of money into polishing this song and making it sound a million miles better!

...

listen man im sorry but this isnt really good wel lthe guiatr is great but the vocals ummm there not the best work on the vocals and it would be better

SwampWater responds:

It's Grunge dude, y'know, the baby of punk? If good vocals is what you seek in a Grunge song then I think you should seek out pseudo-Grunge bands like Bush. I appreciate the comments, but again, Grunge isn't about a polished sound, it's about the emotions you put into a song. Granted, the vocals suck, I admit that, but I already stated that and this IS a demo.

Stay tuned, I've invested £100 in a new USB microphone that will improve the guitar quality and my vocal sound (especially if I make an effort and stretch out the old vocal chords this time). Cheers!

potential

this has potential. you have potential. this was ok but there was no real rhythm to the chords. the notes all just slid into the next one.
and yeah, laying down bass, drums, and multiple guitar parts is time-consuming in ways that are beyond tediousness!
ok for being in the demo stage. yeah it suffers a lot from the digitized quality of the guitar(s) and vocal. the sining was very grunge, a la mudhoney or sonic youth. but like i said this has potential. keep at it!

SwampWater responds:

Thanks, I appreciate the constructive criticism. :-D
