Graeme interviews Jsoull about Madness (2021)

Back in September 2021 I conducted interviews with various Madness creators about the history of the series and it's massive fandom. Krinkels and Cheshyre did text interviews. GabrielBarsch, Gibb50, kRyy and LittleLuckyLink also did text interviews, while Jsoull opted to do a voice call instead. This is the full audio of that chat!

The plan was to cut these up and use them to add insider commentary to a big Madness history video I was working on. That video plan quickly grew WAY too massive and difficult to organize. My solution was to cut out most of the interview I did with animators, and focus on Krinkel's and Cheshyre's own official work. I finished that video in time for the 20th anniversary of the series, on July 25th, 2022.

The plan was to immediately start work on a Part 2 video, focussing more on the Madness fandom, and all the talented individuals and outstanding projects that have spun out from that! I wanted to have that done just a few months later for Madness Day 2022. But I was a little burnt out from completing the first video, was a little disappointed with it's initial performance (it's since grown a lot in views!), and immediately realized how complex the new video would be.

Cutting up and organizing the interviews, and trying my best to represent as much of this fandom as possible in 1 video was a daunting task. I started and restarted the video a few times, but was never happy with how it was shaping up. I refused to give up on it, and leaving it unfinished was a constant itch at the back of my mind. So FINALLY after 2 years, I finally dusted this thing off over the summer and saw it through to release!

I'm thrilled to finally have this out there!

A huge thanks to everyone who agreed to these interviews and who helped out with the project.

Happy Madness Day everyone!!

Great episode! It was awesome to hear about the Madness series, though it’s unfortunate to hear that the Discord communities have many problems. I really enjoyed hearing @Jsoull's thoughts on Madness. I completely agree—the music in Madness is absolutely amazing! It’s always exciting to see new high-quality Madness creations being created!

@Graeme, what do you think about having an album cover for your podcast audio on Newgrounds? Personally, I think that would be awesome!

@Graeme, thanks for sharing the backstory of your conversation with Jsoull. What advice would you give for handling burnout?

@Jsoull, in what ways do you feel the combat in Madness has changed in the three years since September 2021?

Graeme responds:

It's not so much a formal podcast as it was a one-off interview. I'll potentially do more in the future, and will share those here as well. Depending how that takes shape, maybe I'll add some form of album art? But at the very least I should probably give this specific upload some Madness-y art/

As for handling burnout. It's a nightmare! And something I still struggle with. The biggest thing I've learned, is to take more time than you think you need! The wind-down that comes from stepping back doesn't really count as proper rest. You need time to disengage THEN rest. If you don't give it an appropriate amount of time, you won't actually recover.
