I was recently inspired when a friend noted that my apathy toward certain aspects of life doesn't mean I'm seeing the world as it truly is, but rather with a darker lens. This track captures the moment of shedding one's apathy and seeing the world in full vividness. At one point in the track, there's a moment of reflection on how life used to be. I imagine someone walking through a park during the spring bloom, noticing the vivid colors of flowers and trees, the lively birds and people, and fully taking in the surrounding ambiance.

I made this for the final round of NGUAC. Thank you to TaintedLogic and the judges for making this competition happen!

"Whimsical" really is the perfect word for this

Everratic responds:

Indeed, thanks for the comment!

I love the evocative chords at the beginning and the jazzy flair. The strings at :28 are beautiful, and the piece flows really nicely into the clarinet and sax solos at :40. The texture is a bit minimal, and part of me thinks it could use some more prominent percussion to give it a sense of drive. The tuba and “oom-pah” rhythmic emphasis at 1:38 are great, and also provide some variety in the mood of the piece compared to the more upbeat tone earlier. The second string section at 2:22 hits the piece home nicely. I still think this piece would be a tad stronger with a richer texture and atmosphere at times, but the melodies, sound design, and progression are all rather enjoyable as they are. Keep at it, Everratic! ^_^

Everratic responds:

Thank you for the feedback! I agree that the piece is a bit too minimal at times. I could have added more lines and doublings throughout different sections. I do like a minimal approach for a track like this for a cute, lighthearted vibe, so I wouldn't have added that much more though.

For most of the submission period I worked on a totally different track, and it wasn't working as well as I had hoped, so I made a difficult decision shortly before the deadline to start fresh. I got lucky because this track was extremely easy to compose, but I still didn't have enough time to fully develop it. The version I submitted had a few big mistakes that I didn't think I should mention :p I updated it after the results were released.

This is one of my favourite compositions of yours, and what a good time to pull it out in time for the NGUAC finals. This gives me major Ghibli vibes, and your orchestration, as always, is very tasteful. I also feel a bit of Ryuichi Sakamoto in this. I love that little tiny detail at 0:59 that really adds some whimsy! Very emotional and heartfelt throughout. Best of luck in the competition :3

Everratic responds:

Thank you, this means a lot coming from you! I'm pleasantly surprised by the reception so far. I think I tend to think more highly of my tracks that were more difficult to compose, and this track was one of the easiest to compose in a long time - it felt like the track was writing itself and sending signals to my brain xD

I'll check out Ryuichi's music. Let me know if you have recommendations!

Best of luck to you as well!

Nice job! I like the thematic you associate with it. It often only takes a little bit of perspective, and the darkness can turn into light.

There's a funny vibe to it, I would see this in a cartoon, alternating between different scenes to fit the flavor of the current mode.

Everratic responds:

Thank you! Yeah it has a whimsical, cartoony vibe.

If I had a nickel for every star I score this song, I'd have 5 nickels, which isn't nearly enough.

Everratic responds:

Thank you :D
