OverClocked ReMix (https://ocremix.org), home of some absolute bangers in VGM arrangement, occasionally has arrangement contests. DarkeSword, a member of OCR's judges panel, decided to host "Game-Set-Mash!!" a 3-round mash-up contest pitting two teams of collaborators against each other, tasked with arranging two tracks from two different Final Fantasy games divided by era (SNES era - 4, 5, and 6; PSX era - 7, 8, 9). Each team chooses a piece from each game in their era -- we're on Team PSX -- and then each team has one week to mash'em up! Due to health issues, though, this final week was extended to a two-week mix-and-mash.

Week #3 saw "Welcome to Our Town" from FF4 meeting "You're Not Alone" from FF9, "Unknown Lands" from FF5 mingling with "Cosmo Canyon" from FF7, and "Terra's Theme/Overworld" from FF6 crossing swords with "Under Her Control" from FF8. Pixels and I faced off against newcomer Yami this time!

You can check out all the tracks and vote for the ones you think best fit the mash-up rules by clicking this link right here! You'll need an OC ReMix forums account (which is free) to participate in the voting and the poll closes at 11:59pm EDT on Saturday, September 30th. Check out all six tracks from this round -- this compo is fulla bangers!

Been kinda a hell of a couple of months for me, so I haven't been able to leave a proper review. Whaddya say we correct that?

First of all, it starts off (and continues to be) VERY funky and groovy, and then the transition to a heavier tone while still keeping the lighter elements coming in every now and again make this an absolute joyride to listen to from beginning to end. Mashing two tracks together and making them work is already a task as it is, but to do it in the style of yet another group/artist? That kind of stuff deserves commendation, my dude! One minute I'm listening to what feels like a groovy number I could do the samba to, the next I'm back in my comfort zone, and loving every switch, transition, and beat! The harmonies, the rhythms, the back-ups, and the supports all come together to make this a mash-up worth several dozen re-listens, at the very least! It warms my heart to see that neither of you two have lost your edge - rather, you've further refined and honed that edge to be razor sharp and keener than a hawk's talons! I do hope you two are getting the proper support you need to better deal with those health issues, and if you need to take a step back to focus more on that, we'll be here when you come back. At least, I will!

pixelseph responds:

That's gonna be our thing going forward - taking a "this-but-in-the-style-of-that" approach to VGM remixes. I'm not promising they will all be good, or listenable, but since this one is up your alley, I'm hopeful you'll enjoy the tunes coming next!

Also thank you, the health issues were mine (and work-related); without making this a long thing, let's just say... don't bonk your head on stuff at work. I'm better, not 100% recovered but well enough to get back into the swing of things.

Thank you again for the review! :D

I like this, could I potentially use this for a Geometry Dash level?

pixelseph responds:

I would love that! Please let us look into any potential legality issues from doing so first; I’ll reach out via PM with a decision once we’ve come to one!

paradiddlesjosh responds:

Hey, glad you liked it! If you're a fan of music from the Final Fantasy series, please check out our other works on the Audio Portal. We've got some more pieces -- not necessarily FF-related -- cooking for the rest of the year :)
