AIM - The Child of the Moon

Hello judges of AIM,

This piece was composed entirely by me, using instruments and samples I own or am allowed to use. I am aware that a melody in my song might sound familiar, as it resembles a well known melody from the Harry Potter series' soundtrack. I believe it is alright however, because they use different time signatures and aren't the same; parts of it only follow the same melodic idea. I did not intend to copy or resemble anything when I wrote this.

This is the art I based my piece off of, "Rainy Night" by AuroraPLZ.

Thank you.

Hello lovely people of Newgrounds!

Thank you so much for the frontpage!

This piece is being submitted to the AIM contest, and I chose a really pretty artwork to base it off of, so I wanted to make it special... Musical storytelling time!

This piece tells the story of someone wandering aimlessly through a forest, when they are caught up in something beyond themselves.

The smells and sounds of rain and forest creatures draw them into a relaxed, thoughtful mindscape. All is good, and they can enjoy their blissful moment.

After a while, their floating spirits begin to wane somewhat, until they realize they are lost... lost among the trees, clouds, rain, rocks, water, and creatures that don't seem to be trying to calm them anymore. A sense of panic manifests, as the trees and vines seem to be leaning and reaching for them. The forest itself seems to bend and contort, as if it were pointing a hundred invisible eyes at them.

Just as claustrophobia begins to set in, the clouds recede and the full moon is allowed to glow upon the forest, keeping whatever darkness was trying to pull you in at bay. It illuminates a clearing for the person to escape to safety and return the safety and happiness they felt before.

Soon enough, the forest begins to loom over them again as if the darkness wasn't slain, just made dormant. Panic boils in them once more, just in time for the moon to pierce the clouds again.

The gloom is kept at bay, but this time, it appears the forest is fighting back against the dim incantation of the moon. The forest's soul, blackened with malice, pushes against the light with all its strength.

Just as a sense of uncertainty arises, the evil of the forest is sealed away with a resonating boom, and the battle is over. As the person stands up shaking, they see the ground and sky have returned to peace and quiet, like before, as the artwork depicts.

(disclaimer: AIM judge review here! these are just my opinions and thoughts, you can take from them whatever you like! music is subjective and all that. <3)

woah! the production on the big drop sections is top notch - tasty sidechaining and huge synths - and the sweet pentatonic-ish melody of the foresty first section is lovely and heart-wrenching. there's a lot of nice elements to this.

about the artwork you chose here, i don't think anything about it necessarily suggests the 'battle vs evil' dubstep portion of the song, but i do nevertheless think it's rad that you came up with a whole narrative arc to your piece, and the initial part feels like "a rainy night in the magic of the forest" to a T. i don't necessarily want to call the juxtaposition between the two sections unjustified because nothing should be stopping you from taking your art inspiration and letting your imagination run wild with it, but the two parts are fairly disparate in tone and intensity; individually they are both super cool!

also i don't think i would've noticed the harry potter melody thing if you hadn't mentioned it lol, so i wouldn't worry about that part : )

AIM 2023 Judge Review

I really like your submission. I loved the direction you took with it, but sadly I don't think the melodic dubstep style fits the illustration (so I have to deduct some points).

Except for that, it's a super solid song that I really like. Very well produced and has cool melodies and instruments.

Honestly, I think you'd have done much better if you submitted this to NGADM or NGUAC, but with that said, I wish you luck ^^

AIM 2023 Judge Review

In the description, you show an in-depth understanding of the narrative you're trying to accomplish in this entry and I think there's a lot of it that comes through in the music. Orchestral and dubstep and generally two very clashing genres, but the way they come together here feels very organic and the transitions between them feel natural. It's a great choice narratively to showcase the transformation of this moonlit forest at night into a perilous journey.

When the dubstep drop kicks in, I think it helps a lot that the melody from the orchestral section carries over and that overwhelming wall of sound almost feels very bright with all the higher notes while maintaining that intensity. The drop feels very tall, and the entire piece overall does feel very forest-like and whimsical in nature.

Where this piece loses me most is in its structure, particularly in its repetition towards the end. If the intention of the entry was to capture a story, I feel like we should hear more of that reflected in the later sections of the track, especially once 3:42 hits. There might be more of an opportunity to take familiar ideas and transform them in a way that doesn't feel like the track is just restarting. Whether that be to change certain notes within the chord that slightly alter the emotion or adding in an extra layer that changes the rhythm, I think this entry really needed something towards the end to really drive the narrative home.

Overall, I'm impressed with how well you transitioned between your quieter and intensive sections. I love the low solo piano note that closes out the section before the drop first heard around 1:36.

I love it ! I Think you are very talented keep up the good work.

Heh, another rainy song. Seems like we are about to make a story out of all these pictures and songs :D

So, @ChordsInMotion made prequel...a calm windy day before a big storm, i made the storm and you, the sequel, the night after. XDDD love it

I wish you luck in AIM too, the song has nice atmos and drops feel on point and the part on 1:12 reminded me of WaterFlame - Glorious Morning XDD
