1080 p HD video, change settings accordingly!

Haven't been writing much music this year but I've been practicing everyday. This was a very good winter for playing guitar and drums. Not so much a good year for bass but hopefully you can't hear what's bothering me. (rushed passed the mastering stage, lo-fi speakers without a bass amp won't hear the bass guitar at all...)

Today I'm fusing two of my all time favourite genres, jazz and IDM (don't tell prog metal I said that). I didn't take this project very seriously at first but I think it turned out way better than initially expected. Was originally fucking around with a drum patch on the Alesis and decided to record video. Decided to add bass so I took a day to notate a "pulse chart" to get the bass guitar on the same beat as the kick drum. Then I improvised a piano track and tossed some synths on top like a child throwing glitter.

I like the jazzy vibe at the beginning and the crisp, punchy drums at :16. I think you start overusing that pad and crash with the strong attack at :22, and otherwise the texture is pretty minimal. The sound design is really cool, though, and I like the tempo automations at 1:02 or so. The harmonic content here could use a lot more depth and variety after a while, and I also think the structure of the piece needed a stronger sense of ebb and flow. Right now, the piece just gets a bit repetitive and predictable after a while, despite the neat sound design and strong production quality. I also like when the beat slows down at 2:48 and the off beats get a stronger emphasis than they had before. Clearly, your killer sense of rhythm is on full display here, but I would’ve liked to see you round out the composition a bit more with an overarching sense of narrative and more variety in the harmonies. Still, the instrumentation and mixing are top-notch here. Keep at it, Quarl! ^_^

Quarl responds:

Thanks for taking the time TL, and salud!

FP I think is well deserved. As a composition it is simple due to using crashes as chord changes, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The only thing I would take down is the HISSSSSSS on that one sample by a few DB and potentially get some verb or delay on those jazzy chords.

I really enjoyed it. Took me on a mental journey through a coffee shop full of grenades and pokemon for some reason

Quarl responds:

Yeah, highs sounded a little obnoxious on some speakers. I rushed this one without mastering because I'm just really lazy D:

I like how wonky everything is, like the song can't keep up with itself. I feel like you could have gone even wilder with the composition, give it some absolutely nutty jazz chord progressions. Collusion by Phonon comes to mind.

Quarl responds:

Piano was improvised, first take. I was so focused on getting the rhythm of the pulses right, I didn't get very creative with the chords. Just spreading my fingers to hit those octaves alternating between two sparse notes. Sue me.

Yes! *Snaps fingers* :P

Quarl responds:

*arm pump* my man!

The chicken pit crowd went crazy^^ I can hear them chirping in lofi througout the track^^
Edit: ahaha no no! I mean the lofi sounds/arpeggio evoke the chicken, after you described your studio the other day^^ sorry for the confusion, the recordings are clean :D

Perfect track to summon proper springs season and melt all that snow^^
Seems like you had a lot of fun creating this track and it shows in the music!
Well done :)

Quarl responds:

Did I forget to mute some of the video? Damn... little chickens are in there and my old washed up ears didn't pick it up D:
