March 22-26, 1997. 38 men and women led by a charismatic madman claiming to be their messiah committed ritual suicide as the comet Hale-Bopp made its closest approach to Earth, hoping to reach an evolutionary level above human. What a waste.

Hanging in the hall, a flyer on the wall, that says we must evolve.

The world will soon end. In order to transcend, we must relinquish all.

The message was bizarre, and shrouded in mystique, until I heard him speak.

He came down from the stars. He's in my VCR. I play it on repeat.

The prophet said to me that my life had lost its meaning, and if I signed it over we would ride into the sky.

I thought that he could offer a fix to all my problems. I guess I never noticed there was evil in his eyes.

Soon I will escape, this vessel I forsake. I hope you get my tape.

The comet marks the date, we go to meet our fate, and pass through heaven's gate.

They cannot be replaced, the many lives you waste. Humanity erased.

Scouted. Probably one of the most tragic topics to make a rock song out of, and have you seen a picture of Marshall applewhite? He looks just about as insane as his philosophy.

suburbanhavoc responds:

Wow thanks! I watched all their recruitment material and the "exit" tape before writing this, and yeah, he had the crazy eyes. Hard to believe a guy like that could convince people to follow him, but that's the lesson here I guess.
