AIM - The Storm

Sup homies? I'm stoked to share my first AIM 2022 entry with you guys. It's called "The Storm" and is inspired by @aleha84 's artwork called "City View" - Here's a link to view the amazing piece. Defiantly vibe with it as you listen to the track!

Here's a timeline that goes with the piece, as it kinda tells a story about watching a storm pass from a high-rise apartment

0:00 - Storm's approaching, its rainy and mellow at the beginning, a melody is introduced as well as some percussion to gradually build tension.

0:47 - The storm begins, break is introduced as well as many auxiliary synths

1:39 - The storm gets heavier, break gets chopped hard and remixed while new pads and heavy bass create an intense atmosphere. A kalimba sound also helps calm the mood as shit goes down.

2:25 - Eye of the storm begins. Breaks stop as rain continues with thunder in the background. Windchimes play as they sway in the wind. Lil solo on the keys helps build the mood in this segment

3:13 - Breaks come back in with a new melodic bassline and vocal samples. The worst of the storm is gone and its a vibe now haha. Some synths are reintroduced into the mix.

4:00 - Thunder crashes down as the original melody is reintroduced. No more percussion, just pads, leads, and rainy atmosphere until the end.

Hope you guys love this track! Defiantly one of the songs I'm most proud of.

Smart to include that timeline in the description. I have been hounding people for not writing enough about their work. It's a little embarrassing when I can gush more about a track than the artist can. Writing a timeline directs the attention of a judge. There's always a chance judges will ignore it but I will always take notice when someone writes an essay. Your making a statement that the music is undeniably connected the artwork. I'm giving you a good score on emotion for taking the time to just think about how you could relate the song to the image.

I'm loving that people are choosing to use these animated pixel drawings. I feel like DNB is a genre that should make you want to move somehow. Old-school jungle vibes very nicely with these hi-class pixel animations. I'm a little older than others and remember what 90's jungle sounded like. The retro videogame pixel style is almost romantically attached to that via memories and feelings. Watching cartoons growing up, old school breaks would assault us from time to time. Commodore breaks, James Brown funk, Winston Brother loops... the genre is somber and nostalgic for me. A storm can be beautiful when viewed from inside a quite space while looking out a window. The structure of a shelter keeps you safe from a storm and allows you to ponder less important dangers like what you'll eat for dinner or when you need to accomplish a task.

I'll admit to taking off a point for production in that I'm not very impressed with straight-up old-school jungle breaks. I love to hear EDM artists engineer their own kits and sounds which is a skill that can take a very long time to learn and accomplish. It's probably unfair of me to ask you to produce music to a virtuous degree and I really love what I'm listening to. Drum & Bass is one of my favorite genres and has a deeply personal connection to my childhood. You got so many elements perfect, learning to get a little nuttier with your drum programming is the mark of a Junglist that has pushed their boundaries. The technology we have to write music with these days can do so much. A snare drum with three layered samples has the potential to be wired into fidelity units and effect units to really get the crispest tones out of things. Each drum layer can work together to make a full & powerful sound or individually at times to create dynamic structural changes. It's not necessarily something that comes easily but once you start engineering your own drum kits it becomes a huge badge of pride and style. That's really all I have to be critical about. Great work Accel :']

Sup Quarl? I really appreciate this review and your advice! First off, im glad you got those mellow / nostalgic vibes from this track. 90s DnB has quickly become my favorite genre to produce just cuz of the unique feelings that can stem from each track. I'm glad it resonated with you!

Next, i just wanted to say thanks for your production advice :) As a live musician turned producer, its been fun to really get a hang of mixing, mastering, sound / kit design, etc. While it does take awhile to master these skills, im in this shit for the long run haha, so imma use ur advice and always keep pushing my boundaries and producing the highest quality tracks i can!

Wow, the way you broke down this track to each instance of being in this 'storm'--in relation to its art inspiration--is nothing short of brill. Jammin' beat, great change-ups and using flow and soundscape to break up things and give our ears tasty treats around every corner. For some reason, I have a tendency for songs to remind me of things I've experienced IRL. This reminds me of summer rains and thunderstorms in Florida, and the chimes used at times reminds me of the ones we had around the porch of my parents' home there. Nostalgic. The vibe is also very Bomberman-y, especially Bomberman HERO--one of my favorite games from the N64-era. So between that, the feels, the vibe, and the lo-fi / hip-hop / homework beats...I gotta give this 5/5. I have no choice. I surrender... <3

Good luck in AIM 2022, and godspeed!

Accel-yo responds:

So glad that this song really resonated with you :) Some of my biggest inspirations are from 90s era games like bomberman and ridge racer, along with other notable DnB artists from the time. Also, im happy you mentioned the wind chimes! Whenever I heard them growing up, I knew that a storm was coming, so I had to add them for this track haha.

The inspirational piece chosen for this track fits perfectly with the atmospheric sounds that are appropriately incorporated throughout. I sat staring out the virtual window picturing myself on the sofa with a mug in one hand. When the song came to a close, I had to let it play an additional time completely forgetting it's clear skies and 80 degrees through my actual window.

I really enjoyed what you've accomplished in this song, which is why it's 1 of the 4 songs apart of the approved AIM list I'm rooting for. Also, besides discovering both you and your work from this competition, I am now a fan of yours and aleha84.

Accel-yo responds:

Wow man im so happy this track made you feel like that :) Im glad that I could share this vibe with u thru the combination of music and art!

Amazing drumandbass beat. Keep up the great work! :D

Accel-yo responds:

Thanks homie! hope you enjoyed it ;)
