Nemo - Scamverse

The third and final piece I did for the thesis of my friends. I guess I would consider it the theme of the game along with the theme of the main guy named Nemo.

Now I didn't really know who this character was going to be and since they said it was like a detective game, I imagined some sort of calm detective kinda guy. It didn't help that the guy who voices Nemo is my other friend along with the writing of the game to be very different from how I initially imagined it. Nemo is an aloof idiot and I say this because every bit of dialouge I had to clean up for the game had him being lectured by his commander or partner for being an idiot. While it's not entirely the case since it's somewhat serious when it needs to, it was the impression I got working on the voice over ahahaha.

I didn't want to stray too far from the aesthetic of the previous songs so I more or less used the same instruments with minor tweaks to the synths. Gotta have that fancy delay sound on the arp :P.

A section is just Cm7 > Abm7 with those added 9ths to really add that moody sound to the chords. B section is just circle of fifths leading to EbM, the relative major of the key. I have a few tritone subs in there just because my jazz brain wants it there. Pretty simple stuff and like all the others entirely carried by the arrangement.

For some reason I really REALLY like that arpeggio synth with the delay. It really brings everything together into this weird sci-fi kinda mood that I really like. While it isn't rocket science I'm still very impressed with how simple everything is. Music really is more than the sum of its parts huh?

This 3rd game that we all worked on is somewhat significant for me because I actually tried to branch out of that "SNES Sound" into something a bit more out of my comfort zone. I didn't really intend to ditch the SNES samples but at the time I felt like I was using it as a crutch since I could hide beind the fact that I can't afford any nice sounding instruments. It was that mindset of "I'm not good enough to work and tweak the free stuff so I'll use sounds that already sound terrible.". I didn't want to think that way so I really went out of my to use Synths and whatever random plugins I've downloaded.

I think what I'm really trying to get at here is that buying virual instruments fucking sucks and the prices these things go for is so absurd. Seriously, what the hell.

Maybe if I stopped buying fighting games and it's respective DLCs I would have nicer sounding instruments. Maybe I should take my music seriously and try to advertise myself so I get comissions. I don't really know the answer and maybe I'm not really looking for one. I don't feel very confident that my stuff is actually worth money no matter how much I really need it.

If you're reading up to here and have listend to the track, I want to say thanks. My work isn't the best but I put a lot of effort into it. If you can appreciate it then I'm already happy.

If i didn't know that you were limited by the VSTs I would have thought this was a fantastic Indie video game soundtrack!
