oh man

this one builds nicely. The first strings to come in were so washed out with reverb, but I guess thats the feel you were going for, judging by the drum kit that follows them. The swelling pads in the background are so eerie haha.

The intro is a little lengthy though. The reverb def takes away from the melody. The synth strings were jumping around my headphones, sounded sick. But this song sort of dragged out. Not enough variation to last the 6 min without losing some interest.

Overall, a very nice mood you set in this piece, like a dark castle in the woods. Would have much rather heard the said castle be attacked at the end.

WritersBlock responds:

yeah, I wasn't all that happy with the end result, I originally had it at 3 mins, but then all sorts of stuff kinda stuffed up, I had better strings, but it's not so bad. Castle in the woods? Cool.
Thanks for the review.

subject

im gonna disagree with piano forte here, i like the strings and how far foreward they are, although its almost classical as opposed to ambient. kinda stuck somewhere in limbo there.
I think the biggest problem is that altho the notes change, it still feels like the same thing over and over. I think it needs to be mixed up by switching instruments, or adding something like part way thru, or changing the instrument that carries the melody. I think the quiet section might do that, but idk since ya havent made/put it up yet.

again throw in a "bridge" i guess with an entirely diffrent instrument then mix them together with the current thing, then take it out, something to switch it up a bit i think would do it well.

gj tho

WritersBlock responds:

You got me just before I put the new one up. I'm kinda disappointed that my strings VST messed up, but I've replaced it with a different string sound, it's not as good, but it still sounds ok. I pushed it back a little bit (the new strings sound horrible if they're too loud) which brings the focus more to the ambiance of the piece.

Thanks for your review.

hmmm

First you should work on the background noise. it's overcompressed and causes this damn fuzz so you cannot really enjoy the melody at all. my second complain is that the "strings" are very loud. might be just my personal taste but I think ambient songs should be calm, relaxing and be able to creates imagines in your head. but with those strings it's just like BAM BAM BAM all the time. no time to breath between them. a more silent / muted part mixed with the stringsparts would work very well I think.
I'm looking forward to your final product....

WritersBlock responds:

Hey, thanks for the review.
Yeah, I'll have to tweak the background, and tone it down in parts.
I turned up the strings that much because I was afraid it would get drowned out with the atmosphere layer, but if I turn that down, I should be able to turn the strings down a bit too. I should play around with their volume, add a bit of variation. I kind of went for a bit of a more powerful orchestral sound which kind of make it less calm and ambient, but a bit of control over that should keep it fairly calm. I'm thinking of adding a quiet section in the middle, so I think that should mix it up a bit. I'm thinking of a soft pizzicato string bridge kind of thing.
Thanks for your comments again.
