I nearly missed the end of this contest, but a-hah! I made it in time!

Using a mix of natural and chiptune instruments, this piece describes a fun journey through the landscapes of a vast 8-bit world. (I made a version of it that loops seamlessly too ^-^) Also, since the last song I published I've learned a lot about music in general, so I'm hoping I've improved in the places I suffered in the past.

Enjoy!

Edit: updated the mix to make it less ear-hurty (at 11:44pm on 2021-06-21)

I've been learning more about pixel art recently, so I can appreciate the effort that went into this piece by Iviqrr and the skill needed to make it. Definitely check out their other works!

This piece feels so calming and comforting. I like how the notes feel very sparse and independent at times, but their pointilistic nature does convey the feeling of the different aspects of the landscape in a distinct pixelart nature.

The chromatic upper note feels a bit too happy-whimsical to fit with the rest of the composition’s atmosphere, but I think it does tie in nicely when there are multiple melody lines going on. I think the multi-melodic layers pull the piece in interesting dimensions; they almost feel like different elements of nature interweaving with one another but still remaining their own independent entities, like the trees and clouds, maybe.

Out of all the acoustic instruments, I particularly enjoyed the addition of the strings at 1:00. They feel very pixel-like, with their short notes and unnoticeable volume enveloping. I wish that there were more opportunities to hear how that instrument worked against the chiptune sounds, although I did enjoy the little bits of call and response in that particular section.

Overall, I enjoyed the incorporation of the music as the medium itself, whether intentional or not. It was simple, pleasant and hits the atmosphere of the art adequately. Nice work.

Ah I forgot to respond to this review, I got distracted at the time pulling up the project and figuring out what you were referencing 😅. Thanks for all your thoughts, it totally helps!

The sounds and reverb create a nice atmosphere. I feel like the different melodies aren't always working well together, for example around 0:49 I think they kind of clash.
The beginning is promising with the new synth starting around 0:09. However, beginning from ~0:20, I sometimes find it hard to follow where the music is going because there are so many things going on that do not feel very related to each other. For example, the arpeggio starting around 1:30 alone is already quite complex and not straighforward to grasp, and with the additional synth stabs (1:33 and 1:37) it becomes a bit messy to me.
I think you have some very nice sounds, just the way they work together could be improved in my opinion.

Zechnition responds:

This is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for, thanks!

I think because of how familiar I am with the song a lot of the complexity disappears, which makes it a bit difficult for me to hear the places where the instruments are clashing. This is something I need to pay attention to more and train my ears to pick out. I've been implicitly assuming that new listeners would know how all the progressions would proceed, but now knowing that's not true, I can kind of see the aimlessness you're getting at.

I like this!

Zechnition responds:

Yay, I'm glad you like it!

Pretty nice and upbeat, fits the artwork well I'd say. Good luck in the contest!

Zechnition responds:

Thanks lots!

Pretty chill, love the sounds of the synths you chose. Love it!

Zechnition responds:

Thanks! I developed this song with sound design as a major pillar, then built the rest around it.
