My (no longer as of June 25) submission for the 2021 NGUAC competition, a competition I have been wanting to retry for years. Really glad I could make it this year and even if I don’t score well, I’ll be happy to redeem my previous attempt.
A riser of unimaginably high wind speeds, tearing through the landscape as the dark and intense melodic and harmonic structures bring in the essence of mass destruction. Just like a tornado, the song is quick yet impactful, reflecting the one thing Oklahoma is most (in)famous for. Enjoy this short yet powerful piece.
Edit: in tradition of updating some older tracks to fix glaring issues, I added hi-hats to the second half to keep up the pace and tension and fixed some balancing issues.

the noisy riser is very appropriate for a tornado-themed song! and i like the key change halfway through. of course this song has its flaws, but considering this is three years old now i'm sure you've learned how to minimize them by now :)
Thanks for reviewing! This song is ancient so of course it’s not gonna be up to par for 2024. When I started I was hoping for a lot of my fans to be people who searched their home state on NG and came across me as their top search result, and it looks like that’s what happened lol. But of course, the series is done now, so you’d probably enjoy my newer stuff a lot more

Wow, this sounds really nice. I love how you used a tornado for the disc. Paints a beautiful picture. Have you ever tried using instruments? I feel like a brass harmony would have sounded really good here.
I agree, and if I had a few hundred dollar computer software I would probably have been able to add in more varied instruments. The problem is it feels like 60% of the synths FL has are complete garbage for the types of music I create, there’s a weird emphasis on funk and modern renditions of it.

I am really trying to find my “mixing style” right now as I attempt to make my compositions sound more professional. This is my first real implementation of sidechain and I thought it went better than I expected but the end result is that I used some instruments that didn’t transition well into this at all. I still really like the super saws but when I removed the bottom end of the chords it didn’t sound like I wanted. Still learning haha.
