Update April 21 2021: Since I don't wish this song to go to waste, I'm allowing downloads. However the same rules apply. If you plan to use this in a project, you must contact me first.
Update April 17th 2021: Bad news my listeners. My work has been rejected. The reason? Because the contest rules state, that it should only be between 3 - 6 Minutes. The host @Random-storykeeper has informed me that there is a lenience of 20 seconds over the 6 minute mark, but 40 seconds apparently is not OK. Now I do not want anyone to get mad or blame this on the host, all they're doing is enforcing the rules of the contest. But I'm not gonna lie I am kinda ticked that I didn't get in. It's my first music contest and I blew it because of a technicality. I hate when all the work I've done is for nothing. But I'm keeping the song up for your enjoyment. So enjoy.
I wanted to make sure I could do this before I started working on it. This is my entry to the 2021 Art Inspired Music Contest. I asked the host Random-storykeeper if said music could be inspired by fanart. When told yes I decided to make a song inspired by this lovely piece:
Created by @OddJorge7
Which depicts a comparison between Gojira in his prime and Gojira wounded.
Now the lazy thing would be to copy Akira Ifukube's iconic theme and believe me I was tempted to do so, because I always wanted to do my own take on it. However, since the contest doesn't allow remixes or covers, this gave me more of a challenge.
Then it hit me. In the 2014 Godzilla movie, the music was made by Alexandre Desplat. Whom made the conscious choice not to remix or cover any of Ikufube's music. So I decided to take his approach. Make a song that would depict Gojira in this picture, but an original song, based on my own take of it.
The first thing I wanted to do right away was the percussion. I figured the big guy should have a music version of his iconic steps. However in a bit of a twist, delayed the drum intentionally. I figured considering this version is wounded from battle, I'd try to make a sound similar to him limping, at least until the end when he's regained his strength.
The second thing I did was decide on the overall tone of the music. Considering that OddJorge7 is mostly a horror based fan artist, I decided to take Gojira back to his horror roots. Giving tension to the music as it rises and falls, to give a sense of similarity to a battle wounded soldier trying to make it home so he can recover.
Last but not least, the roar. I couldn't use the iconic roar, because it would have broken the rules so I made my own. It's not great, but it's sure to scare the hell out of anyone listening.
In the original movie, Gojira's roar was created by taking a cello out of tune, and rubbing the strings with a resin laden leather glove. So as a nod to that, I made a bass heavy roar, by mashing as many notes together as I could.
While I don't expect to win, I do hope you enjoy the music and I hope it scares the hell out of you.
