I was just goofing around making this one.
I really wanted to figure out what made a 4 piece band tick. Ironically I never really got the chance to compose specifically for 2 guitars, 1 bass and a drum set during my studies. It was at the very least rhythm section for a big band/orchestra but it's not quite the same as having just those instruments.
I wouldn't necessarily say I understood it completely when I was making this but it's progress in the right direction I think. It still feels like something is very much missing. A bit of time later after making this I came to realize that I was strictly following the idea that one instrument is the melody, the other is harmony, then bass and drums etc.
What I've noticed in the songs that I listen to is that while that still is the general framework there are moments in the song (usually my favorite parts) that's the band playing is unison with each other, like how both guitars and the drums are playing the exact same line with the drums accenting specific parts of that line.
Next is the idea of a good melody. A good melody relies on a lot of things and it's different with every context. I felt that in this song particularly I didn't shape a melody that allowed me to better express the "band sound" better. I still need to figure this out but that's my current thought on the matter.
The most important thing I learned I think while making this piece is that in this style of music, the effects you put on your instruments matter a lot. I'm a cheap piece of shit and I can't afford fancy guitar plugins so I just got a free one from freevst haha. Without that chorus effect or whatever the heck I put on the guitars it sounds so gross.
Funnily enough I'm using the default FL Studio bass plugin thing because I really like that sound even though it sounds bad. I would have probably changed it to a much more appropriate instrument but I didn't feel like putting more time into this one. Same thing with the drums now that I think about it. I just really like the sound but I should probably get used to changing it to make it more original.
I like this piece for a lot of reasons. Mostly the feel of the song really but I do see areas for improvement.
