Shape Up Pumpkin

Share

My submission to the 2011 Newgrounds Pumpkin Carving Contest. This is all based on the flash by SardonicSamurai called "Shape Up". You can view that awesome cartoon here: http://www.newgrounds.com /portal/view/556161

Thank you.

Quite funny actually

I liked that you chose the easiest characters to carve. It's a funny contrast with all the other pumpkins with a lot of teeth and evil eyes.

You did basically the same last year though. I didn't see it back then, so for me it's original, but I can see that for others the joke isn't funny anymore.
I would've liked it more if a candle was in there. It would've been nice to see what kind of light those shapes created. Or you could project it on your wall.

not the best design x.x

The idea you had here was good, but I really would have liked to see a more explosive design. The simple shapes cut out of the pumpkin literally look like they could have been done in a 5 minute period.

Protips:
- I would definitely recommend physically carving the words into the pumpkin rather than writing them on
- I can still see the outline; clean off those leftover black lines
- Find a creative way to make those shapes more design-dominant

Overall not bad, but needs work

Agreed. I'll try and whip up something better for next Halloween.

More effort?

Not terrible, but you should've definitely tried harder.

I guess it's nice that you got the lines pretty straight, but that's about it.

It's just too boring and uninspired. I'm sure you could actually accomplish something if you actually try harder next time though.

I'm going to go ahead and end this review now since I'll just be repeating myself and the other reviewers. Listen to them though, they have good advice.

Not the best

Not really the best pumpkin I've seen this year but also not the worst one I've ever seen either. Kind of bland with it just being a few shapes carved into the pumpkin. I guess if you had spent time with pencil and carving the pumpkin you could have gotten something far more better than this.

At least you tried anyways so that counts for something. I would simply suggest looking up some carving tutorials and try to take time with carving out, you don't have to cut out just holes, if you cut off the outside into little pieces you can get shading and all kinds of neat textures once you carve it all and put a candle inside to see the end result.

Overall, not the best or worst, just kind of boring.

ZJ responds:

FUCK.

There's a reason I don't carve pumpkins

Because I couldn't do much better myself... and I don't like pumpkin, so why waste it?

Anyway, this is very similar to last year's Tall 'n Short. There's a distinct lack of ambition in this piece - making a Tetris scene would have been much better, as there's a lot of detail to something like that. I know it's based on SardonicSamurai's work, but that's still no justification for a pumpkin being carved like this. Last year, the joke was amusing, this time, it wasn't so good.

I suppose that I should give you props for straight lines, even though the level of the block on the right looks to be just a little higher than the rest. You could have used some sort of straight edge for that, perhaps a bucket, so that the pumpkin is lowered to the correct level, thus enabling the carving to be done, while also providing a handy line to use as your "ground floor".

Yeah, I agree. It was a lazy copout on my part. I gotta get my shit together...
