I've been trying fruitlessly for the past few months, to try and figure out how to learn softer, more natural/painterly shading, instead of my usual cell-shading. Finally, after hundreds of hours of near pointless work, and just as many tutorials memorized, I found a technique that works.

I tried shading in greyscale, as shown in one of the recent DrawWithJazza videos on YouTube, and it actually worked, allowing me to focus entirely on learning soft shading techniques, instead of getting bogged down with color choice at the same time. It helped so much, so thanks is in order for Mr. Jazza, since he's ended months of torture due to my inability to learn any other way.

Anyway, these are two of my original characters; ZaXo and Mini. They're my favorite to draw, so I like to put them in all manner of situations. As for the quote, it's just something I came up with in a few seconds, that I felt fit with the theme I was going for. Anyway, any feedback would be greatly appreciated :)

Great work! Thanks for the plug in the comments ;) Your execution here is very good, the main thing lacking is visual interest though. Some kind of environment or challenge in character perspective or pose. Your lines and colors are very solid and well done though so as a painting exercise you should be pleased! Keep it up!

ZaXo-KenIchi responds:

Thank you. Hopefully I can work more on actually implementing painted backgrounds soon.

And you're welcome :) Mentioning your artistic knowledge is the least I could do.
