Pixel Day 2022 Little Betty Avatar

On October 10th, 2021, I hit the screenshot button on my keyboard while I was live streaming my favorite cat on my Discord server and I loved how Little Betty looked in that screenshot. I loved it so much that I changed my avatar to it and started using that screenshot in my speedrun videos. Then on January 15th, 2022, I decided to spend much of my day working on a pixel art project for Newgrounds. I had the idea of transforming my webcam screenshot into pixel art with a four color pallet taken from the Tails sprites in the Sonic Advance games.

This animated GIF showcases the evolution of how I made the pixel art at 100% in size.

The only change I made to the image since the day I worked on it is that I initially used some of the blacks in the wrong places. I use the darkest black imaginable for the strawberry & black border, but the sprite of the cat is supposed to only use a saturated black that was used in the Sonic Advance games. What's interesting about the art direction to Sonic Advance 2 is that the developers used a saturated black for the character sprites, but the overlay that showcases the ring count uses the darkest black imaginable to provide additional contrast. I really like that artistic choice, which is one of the reasons why I use a different black for the border.

This is the layout I plan to use for future speedrun videos.

I also have a darker version of the layout that I plan to use for those videos when gameplay is turned off. The three shades of purple were taken from pixel art I worked on in 2017.

I was hoping to have a new speedrun video out before Pixel Day 2022, but I was not thrilled with my gameplay. My perfectionism ruined one of my recent runs where I was playing my best, but then I did so badly at a boss fight that I rage quit. You can view that rage quit video on YouTube. It does not use my pixel art, but it showcases a layout I worked on earlier this month.

I want to say thank you to Newgrounds for being a website that lets me proudly display my pixel art. Not only do I look forward to Pixel Day every year, but I look forward to participating in future Pixel Day events. I have been using this website for 19 years and it's still one of the best websites on the internet. I did not create much content for Newgrounds in 2021 outside of my Pixel Day 2021 Rabbit entry from last year, but I think this year will be different because I feel way more artistically motivated. ^_^

It's worth mentioning that I used the tag "pixelday2022-compo", but I'm not sure if this is eligible because I showcased it a week early in a Newgrounds post when it was 99% finished. I thought I was going to work on it longer, but I loved how it was to where I didn't want to make additional changes to it outside of me fixing some of the color pallet mistakes with the blacks. I also showed a bunch of friends my pixel art to get feedback, but this project was always intended to be a creation meant for Pixel Day 2022.

Thank you, I tried my best to make my favorite cat look cute as pixel art. ^_^

You should upscale the image, so that it doesn't look blurry.

WillieCorley responds:

I don't see it blurry outside of the thumbnail and you can see an upscaled version of the pixel art in the description. I wanted to submit it at 100% in size because that was how I wanted it to be judged by people.

I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!! seriously, you are really talented!

WillieCorley responds:

Thank you. ^_^
