Digital Art doesn't lead to accidental blood rituals ;) But hey, Happy Tree Accidents.
I had so much fun doing this. I've never taken part in any art competitions and, honestly, I'm very proud of what I've accomplished, not just the product of my efforts, but the entire experience. I found out about this competition about an hour after I should've been asleep on the 8th. I spent about 3 hours thinking of things I could do despite being uncertain as to whether I should even compete. Knowing that I was unlikely to win I shifted my efforts toward narrative - I wanted to tell a story. I wanted to share a moment. I wanted to put just a little piece of myself out there. I decided that I'd take my over-trusting nature and place that flaw in the context of immense vulnerability. But that story needs a conflict. It needs a possibility of failure and of success. It needs a bond. So this couldn't be too sinister or too friendly. It had to be grey. And because the theme was of integration and conflict (Cooperation / competition with Traditional and Digital art) I chose to integrate themes that played that up. Yin and Yang came to mind quite quickly. I tried a lot of different ideas. The story is much deeper than this image will expose directly - I had to kill a lot of my stuff to meet the deadline and keep the bond I was showcasing from being overrun by showing who this boy is and what he's gone through and is still going through. I pulled this off by spending roughly 10 hours every day working on this piece. I avoided burnout by knowing that this piece would be "done" on the 22nd regardless of what I did + I focused on the intrinsic value of my work, as I always have. It's too easy to get lost in the outcome of your efforts but I prefer to focus on the way I feel while I'm working and maintaining my focus on the next chapter of my story.
(: It's probably not the greatest thing ever but I'm happy with what I was able to achieve. Don't know what the official "BY THIS HOUR IN THIS TIMEZONE" deadline is so hopefully 5PM PST on the 21st is alright, I see that it's about 10am on the 22nd in Australia. I definitely have more things that I'd like to do with this image but I'm also SO sick of it after spending so much time on it! AH!
I tried to incorporate EVERY possible type of medium (Graffiti, Blood, Finger painting, VFX, ect. ) but it turns out that my angles didn't allow my concept art to translate well. So a lot was lost, including a key character, the outfit, ect. Just due to time constraints D: I also got sick so that set it back as well. But staying focused throughout this entire piece has been pretty encouraging overall.
