José Sebastián Vargas "The Eagle"

Share

"The Eagle" is the nickname of the Administrator of the Southern California Area, José Sebastián Vargas, a corrupt, vile and bloodthirsty being who wishes to obtain his own benefits by selling California to Russia or England. From the beginning, his plans begin to come to light, in large part due to the presence of "El Zorro", and the operations he performs to defeat all his envoys to Los Angeles. Each of the latter has an Eagle Feather, which is cut out, thus marking an internal code that indicates which Mission each must undertake. They always seem like ordinary people, Citizens as such, although deep down they seek to demoralize Society for who they are. The first Envoy that appears in History is Esteban Rojas, who with the consent of the new Magistrate of the King, Carlos Galindo, also Envoy by "El Águila", assassinates Captain Meléndez, appointed Commander of Los Angeles after leaving Monasterio. the same day you start your activities. His murder was due to how upright and respectful he was with the Law, a fact that throughout history will be the opposite of what Vargas seeks in Californian society.

As a result of these events, more murders, robberies and other acts of corruption occur, such as the trafficking of jewels stolen from various Missions in South America, among which is the famous "Cross of the Andes", made of pure gold, or the murder of another man who would be the Commander of Los Angeles, Juan Ortega, who is thrown into the sea and impersonated by Andrés Fernández, yet another emissary whose mission is to balance the situation in Los Angeles so that he can benefit "Águila" himself. , who always controlled his operations from Monterrey.

Fernández's career posing as Ortega ends very early, without great changes, because "El Zorro", always present behind each event, prevents him from exercising his mandate of tyranny at the head of the Barracks. In those days, "Rosarito" Cortez, Diego's childhood friend, arrived in the town. The girl was traveling in the first class of the ship with the real Commander Ortega and Mr. Fernández, her impostor, only that she disembarked in San Pedro. Seeing that her environment begins to suffer from certain hasty decisions of the new Commander, she asks Diego, of whom she had an image of strength and courage, to intervene in the conflicts that occur, but he refuses and always flatters which will send. Messages to the Governor to solve what is happening, "Rosarito" is deeply delighted with "El Zorro", and from his encounters, in which the latter saved his life, he encourages Diego to be like him, or similar. When he saw her shopping in the market in the plaza, "Comandante Ortega" was scared and revealed to Galindo the possibility that he would recognize him as a fraud.

The Magistrate sends Fernández to "take care" of "Rosarito" to prevent her from discovering him. Thanks to the help of Zorro, she saves her life, so the false commander escapes to the town. Frustrated with the entire plan that had been entrusted to him, Andrés Fernández, to escape, stole the money that corresponded to the back wages of the soldiers in his Strongbox. While fleeing from him, Zorro intercepts him and begins a chase through the roofs of the houses and the barracks under the watchful eye of García, Galindo and the Soldiers. In a hand-to-hand fight, Fernández rips off Zorro's mask and realizes that "El Zorro" is actually Diego de la Vega. To escape freely, he offers him the coins he had stolen from him, but Diego refuses because he tells him that he prefers all the loot to part of him. Neither the soldiers nor Garcia can hear what they are talking about on the roof. Taking a wrong step on an eaves, Fernández falls into the void and dies instantly, taking Zorro's secret with him. Galindo orders García and the soldiers to capture Zorro immediately, but Zorro throws the money stolen by the false commander at them, causing the military to be distracted by collecting the coins while Zorro escapes before the fury of the Magistrate.

Following Fernández, posing as Ortega, Captain Arturo Toledano arrives from Spain, accompanied by his wife Raquel, who will undoubtedly be the most faithful and honest in all of History. Immediately after his arrival, Galindo encourages him to join the Conspiracy led by "El Águila", but he denies it and remains faithful to the Spanish Crown, trying to order the crisis that had occurred as a result of the attitudes of the ancestors of him. . Regarding "El Zorro", he has a negative look that later changes when he becomes an Ally of him and on one occasion unlocks the actions that certain Agents of the Eagle, involved in the Garrison, try to do to attempt against his life.

As none of his Envoys had the desired impact, Vargas moves directly to Los Angeles, where he appropriates with the abuse of his Authority the De la Vega Treasury, and from where he will try to sell to California to one of the two countries that were mentioned previously, a fact that does not go as expected, and that motivates him to start a new revolt, less, but effective, that seeks to leave California in his hands. Because "El Zorro" spies on him and fights against him, he ruins all his plans and in such a fact, he ends up defeating Vargas with the help of an Army of 50 Men that Alejandro de la Vega had summoned to no longer allow so much tyranny and disorder in California. After this, Sebastián Vargas is assassinated in the Barracks by Greco, his Personal Assistant, who takes revenge for not having protected him in a previous attack against his figure. He points the gun at him and shoots him, falling on the Flag that he raised to consecrate California as his own.
