Now, I try not to be a fanboy of things, but if there's one video game franchise I love near to the point of obsession, it's Castlevania.
For quite a while, I've had an idea for a Castlevania fangame that I'll most likely never get around making because I can't do it all myself and I'm hesitant to ask other people to work on a project that I'd most likely abandon at the first sign of challenge.
I racked my brain thinking up a title, considering that many games in the series use musical titles (e.g. Symphony of the Night, Aria of Sorrow, Harmony of Dissonance, Rondo of Blood, etc.), so I decided to use "Overture." Then I wondered what the second part would be. "Blood?" Too overused. Besides, I wanted to use a heavenly body. Since "Moon" sounded a bit too overused and cliched, I decided on "Mars." Hence, the title "Overture of Mars."
This gave me a great opportunity to use Photoshop and make a 1280x800 wallpaper "promo." I took the logo for "Castlevania: Lords of Shadow" that I found at www.themarriedgamers.net/
wp/wp-content/uploads/200 9/06/castlevania_logo_bla ck_bckg-1023x390.jpg and fooled around with it until I could cleanly separate it from its background, then I applied a layer style to it to make it stand out more. I took a photo of Mars (www.windows.ucar.edu/mar s/images/mars1.gif) and put it in the background, and I put a heavily edited picture of Dracula's castle (I can't find the source image I used again, but I know I got it by googling "Dracula's castle") in the foreground, applying some lighting effects to it using layer masking and gradients. Then, Using some cloud brushes and star brushes from qbrushes.com, I finished the background.
I worked very hard on this and am proud of my work, but I am always looking for ways to improve myself.
