Not all syphon spells go right. Usually, when a syphoning spell goes wrong, it simply explodes, releasing all the energy absorbed back out into the world. However, very rarely, if a syphon absorbs too much energy too quickly, it can grow rapidly, pulling in more and more energy theoretically forever. This is what happened with this syphon, though it was sealed before it got out of hand. However, syphons that go wrong like this cannot be destroyed manually. The only way to destroy it is to seal and starve it, forcing it use energy absorbed to sustain itself until it runs out and evaporates. The amount of time varies, depending on the size of the syphon. It shouldn't take too long for this one to vanish, assuming no one accidentally damages or destroys the seal, in which case, it will take even longer.
That is, of course, assuming it is sealed before it gets out of hand. Unfortunately, this syphon was created in a very energy rich area...
