Duality - Ikaruga

Author Comments

One of a few video game themed paintings I've done. This was a depiction of the concept behind the top-down shooter Ikaruga, a video game made by Treasure, which revolved around the ability to change the 'polarity' of the titular ship, the Ikaruga, from light to dark and vice-versa. There are no night levels in Ikaruga, but the daytime ones have a definite orange hue and the black polarity ship contrasts nicely with that, so I extrapolated the other half.

One of my oldest paintings (that's worth showing anyways), and likewise, one I could certainly do better today, but nonetheless, the concept was solid, even if the technique wasn't. Hope you guys like it, and if you have any suggestions for video game scenes to illustrate, I'm all ears. (I've done a few others of course, if you want to see those) Enjoy!

Oil on Canvas, 2007 (some photoshop used for cropping, lighting - any suggestions on good ways to capture paintings? XD)

I loved this game, as a huge fan of shmups, from mainstream Galaga to slightly less mainstream star soldier on the turbografix, this was a modernized delight. Simple mechanics but the light / dark dynamic was a blast and it held up the standard of being grueling and hard. Love the concept of this piece as well, amazing work! Love the colors , kudos!

Ikaruga was a generic bullet hell with only shots and missiles
missilies were gained by absorbing a number of shots of the same polarity
only 5 missions, but wtf TouHou only has maybe 6 plus a bonus.

Ikaruga was fun and had amazing graphics. This is really something
but i degress you got the colors backwards

the colors are White/Blue and Black/Red. not White/Red and Black/Blue.
aside from this ONE mistake (not a big one) it really owns

I love Ikaruga! Great game. Your art work is impeccable.
