Basically, I found an old concept sketch of Gossamyr from when I was writing the first draft way back when, and reworked it. I also figured it could make a nifty little ad for the book, and you guys like artwork of naked exotic women, so its a win all around.

As a Myotan becomes adult, they become too heavy to fly, so over the course of their lives they turn their wing membranes into works of art, spending decades developing tattoos for them. Here, Gossamyr is about 20, so her tattoos are still in the nascent phases. On her right wing will be a sunrise over mountains, and on her left wing here, a sunset over water.

To answer a question someone had when I first announced the novel, Gossamyr's people, the Myotans, are transhumans, meaning their race was genetically engineered from a baseline human lineage with bat DNA mixed in to create certain traits, such as their wings and fur. Their DNA is over 98% human.

I can't speak for any other creator who does anthro characters, but I've always considered every anthro character I draw and write about to be a transhuman. Chimpanzees, humans' closest genetic relative, share over 98% of the same DNA with us, and they look and act a lot more inhuman than most 'furry' characters I've see in art and stories. It makes sense to to me that anthro characters are much closer to humans than chimpanzees, and would be almost entirely human genetically, except for the chimera genes responsible for their most prominent animal features.

Ink and colored pencils 2012.
