Beetle Mania

Share

Forgotten by many and excluded from the sequel, the wrongfully-neglected Beetle Mania remains my favorite... uh, wrestler(?) from the King of the Monsters series and, of equal unimportance, my favorite SNK character overall. He should have been chosen for Smash, instead of Terry, but Terry's fine. It's fine. I used to play the arcade of the original at a Don Carter's bowling alley back when I was an ugly kid and have played through the SNES ports of both several times as a teen. Nowadays, I can't even remember if I still have the SNES cartridge of either one in storage. Maybe I oughta go digging through my collection and find out, yeah? Anyways, I didn't see any fan art of the regal beetle, so I scribbled my own on a store brand notepad and colored it in with pencils I bought at the same grocery store. Fancy, I know! His in-game sprites and manual art have, at least, three different looks to them, so I tried to incorporate all of them into one eyesore. Came out (slightly) better than I thought it would.

Anywho, enjoy the mess, praise Beetle Mania, and stay sexy.

OK. THIS is SOLID. There is obviously room for improvement, but I can't overlook the awesome line-work and attention to shading. There is a lot of charm in the 'highschool coloring scheme' too. IDK what you term this style of shading. Lol. Pardon the expression. Also, I'm glad you got back into drawing stuff again! You shoulda told me earlier you whore =p

I draw to relief stress, usually, or if I got some stupid idea floating in my mind. I'm hoping to do some more of it once I get everything set up in my new home, but I'll also need to find myself a new job, and that will eat up free time like my job here did.

I know almost nothing about proper shading. I just color it to make it look okay-ish and I know almost nothing about properly coloring something, as well. A lazy amateur who likes to doodle.

I was really surprised by this particular one. At no point did I think it would turn out this well. I just wish I had found one of my rulers to straighten those lines for the character select screen background I gave it. After doing a lot of packing for the move, I found five rulers in various boxes, including the metal one I thought I lost over a decade ago. Oh well.

Thanks again, Alex, for the strong encouragement. I'm half tempted to pull my pencils out of... well, whichever box I put them in, and draw something right now. It just seems like a bad idea to be taking things back out when I haven't made the move yet. That and I don't know what to draw.

Yooo, nice work! This design looks tough to draw but you made it look easy. Great colors too. Makes the volumes of your shapes pop

Phronemophobia responds:

All I did was try to combine three different pieces of official art work I found online. I'm sure you'd be able to do a much better job. I just didn't feel confident in recreating something from the in-game sprite alone.

I was surprised by how the colors came out. I normally lack the ability to combine pencils effectively, but I was pretty happy about this one.

Thank you for the kind words, Squidd.

Incredible work, my dude.

Phronemophobia responds:

Awww, thank you, Moe!

this is tens times better with colorsčś«!

Phronemophobia responds:

...and is now a thousand times better with your love and approval.

Thank you, Chutney! <3

Phronemophobia responds:

Yes, absolutely!
