Fukuro Mujina

Share

Mujina are shapeshifting badgers in the same vein as Kitsune(foxes) and Tanuki(raccoon dogs), though more elusive and thus rarely observed. Some of them are known to hoard, like the Fukuro Mujina or Bag Badger. They’re dressed like noblewomen, and carry their belongings around in a huge, somewhat comical, sack. They’re oddly affable even around humans. Unfortunately it’s because they’ll always steal something from a person. Don’t approach them without anything in exchange. Invite them to rest and offer to feed them. They’ll show off their haul and might give away a handsome reward to the benefactor. Never under any circumstances steal from them, they’ll take off some fingers and disappear into the forest using their shapeshifting ability!

Their name and origin seem to come from an idiom about uncertainty, since trappers aren’t sure what’s they’ll get when they try to stick their hand into a badger’s den.
