Transformers Tuesday: Glorious.

Been a little bit, hasn't it? School's been kicking my ass a little bit, but I'm glad to be taking classes again. I'm getting a handle on it again. I hope you guys have been doing well!

This piece started off as a simple drawing of Megatron, mostly for myself. Just something to draw for myself, not for an assignment or for a request or anything. Something to work on without worrying in my free time. But as I worked on it, as usual, I got way more invested than I thought I would.

This design is most heavily based on Megatron's appearance in Transformers: Animated, mixed with elements from the IDW comics, specifically More Than Meets The Eye. When I drew Animated's incarnation of Optimus Prime, I talked about how Animated was my gateway drug into the franchise, and how looking back, it's incredibly unique and one of my favorite series, especially for its unique reinventions and now-iconic incarnations of the established characters. Megatron is a great example.

For one, the conflict between Autobots and Decepticons is given a lot more weight in Animated since Decepticons are the only ones who really have weapons, and transform into more combat-capable vehicles. The Autobots "weapons" are more like tools, for the most part. The Decepticons are absolutely strapped in contrast, particularly Megatron. Not only does he have his devastating Fusion Cannon, but he's got two swords and a lifetime of combat experience. So when the young and inexperienced Optimus is faced down by a robot twice his size, carrying more weapons than you can shake a Rob Liefeld at, you learn very early on that Megatron is to be feared and respected. Corey Burton's voice acting is a major part of why I love this incarnation so much, giving Megatron a very cool and quiet menace to him, as opposed to the usual megalomaniacal yeller. So even though he spends the majority of the show as a scheming, disembodied head, you understand why Decepticons like Lugnut and Blitzwing worship him like a god.

It was a lot of fun to let myself get caught up in this piece. I think placing the grey-and-red Megatron against a primarily blue-and-white tundra really worked out, I think it looks sick. Hope you enjoy it!

Cool :O !!!

Although I'm not a fan of transformers, but it looks awesome.

I’m glad you were able to get something out of it!

Fantastic use of color. He's dark and brooding here, while the red pops out in a harsh way that's fitting.

moewales00 responds:

Thank you so much! Megatron’s colors are often relatively dull, so I wanted to play that up by having him in the shadows. But I didn’t want him to be completely lost in the shadows, so I had the red pop.

Megatron: RISE DECEPTICONS we have much to do
