In 2005, my brother and some of his friends made a short film called The Challenge. It’s about a man trying to beat the most unfair video game ever made. I was enlisted to animate the gameplay footage.
The game was called Hoagie’s Revenge, and starred an Italian deli owner battling the forces of evil with an endless supply of hoagies. About 25 animations were made of the player dying in the most bizarre ways I could come up with.
I thought I lost most of the sprites to a hard drive crash. Fortunately, the editor of the movie still had a file containing most of the animations in lossless quality. After ripping them, and recreating a few missing assets, I assembled these sprite sheets for your enjoyment.
This is a collection of "sprites" I made of the many enemies throughout the game, some based on real video games. For the most part, they all adhere to the limitations of the NES: 8 x 8 pixel tiles, 52 color palette, 4 colors per sprite.
Years ago, several people asked if they could make a real game based on Hoagie’s Revenge. Since then, the Kaizo genre has risen in popularity. So if you want to put in the time and effort, you have my permission to use these sprites. Just be sure to credit me. :)
If you'd like to learn more about the movie, I wrote an article about it here:
