Land of the Walking Plants

They are plants and they walk, can't you see???

I don't know why, but my scanner made it look like crap.

Merol responds:

Interesting idea.

This is drawn very well, and you have a pretty cool idea. Like all other submissions there are some good and bad things in this, but it's an all around good drawing. Nice job.

The colours you chose were great. As Haggard said, it's nice that you had a variety of different colours and not one or two boring colours. Didn't understand why the sky was orange, though.

The concept is good and the picture itself is drawn really well. The plants look really weird but still look like plants, and there's a large amount of detail in the picture. Still, this picture has its defects. Firstly, I really can't understand the perspective of the picture. The plant in the middle looks bigger than it should be compared to the other plants in the background and the path unnecessarily widens, as Haggard pointed out. Secondly, all of the plants look the same and I would've loved to see some really unique and weird different plants walking around too. Thirdly, at times this drawing lacks use of a ruler, such as with the pipe thing at the top left. Fourthly, there's a plant on the right hand side which looks really flat. Finally, I think there's a little too much empty space in the foreground, which could have easily been fixed if you added a few more plants walking.

The background, contrary to the foreground, is extremely detailed, and I really don't think there's anything I can point out which needs work in the background. Good work.

Overall, this is a very cool drawing. A few nitpicks here and there make me give you an 8, but you're talented at drawing so keep it up. Also, sorry if something doesn't make any sense in this review. I'm in a bit of a hurry because I have loads to do and as you probably already saw, this review does look a bit rushed, eh? xP.

Merol responds:

I think I screwed up on the perspective, damn. Actually, I don't know why the sky it's orange either, but the thing that bugs me it's the water, it should be orange too.
Thanks man, you pointed some good things (and your review doesn't looks rushed).

A very nice picture indeed. The concept is nice and I got a bit reminded of that "smart plant" in Fallout 2 that want's to change location. Even though it can't walk on it's own I somehow got reminded of it.

Anyway, as I've said, the picture looks nice. The drawings are pretty good and very detailed and I like how you coloured the plants. Not just boring two colours (green for the stalk, a different colour for the blossom) but very interesting colours indeed.

Too bad the picture looks a bit "blurry" from time to time. I guess this is because you chose to paint it with pencils instead of a different tool. Or maybe it is because of your scanner.

The only thing that really bothers me with this picture is the path we can see in the right bottom. It looks as if it gets wider the more it goes to the right. Maybe that was intentional, but it does look a bit weird. I know, there's supposed to be a perspective in this pic, but I think the bottom line of the path should be a bit "closer" to the upper line.

Merol responds:

It looks blurry because of the pencils? or because of my scanner? maybe both.
About the path, you mean the last part of the path? If you mean about the part that look like this: ________/ then yeah, it was intentional, if you look closer you can see that the plants get fired out at the end of the path.

If you are not talking about that, then it wasn't intentional, my bad.

-Interesting concept to say the least. If plants did actually start walking in my front yard I would think I was tripping on something. Plants don't usually walk and are quite content with their spot that they live and put down roots. I don't see any reason why they would want to change their minds and move from place to place unless there was more light in a certain area. Quite the imaginary environment that you put together though. It reminds me a lot of Dr. Seuss books and how random the environment would be.

-There are some nice details in the drawing but it tends to look a little blurry in spots since you used colored pencils to draw and color this for the most part. I can't really tell if you sketched it first or not. I like the wide variety of colors used and this just adds to the imaginary design of the environment.

Merol responds:

It's a picture about plants that walk in a magical world where water floats... and you are trying to find a sense to it???
THANKS A LOT!!! and yes, I sketched it first (also, if a plant do actually start walking in front of me, I would think it is pretty cool and disturbing).

Day of the triffids anyone?

This reminds me of the novel "day of the triffids" by John W.
Were you inspired by said book?

Anyway the drawing itself is quite good, as I often state, inking the piece would make the lines come out better, and elevate the piece as a whole.

Furthermore I think using inks for colors would have been a good idea too.
Overall it's really cool!

Merol responds:

Wow, I never heard about that book before, but I searched something obout it, and I can see what are you talking about. Even with that, I think the design it's very different.
And yeah, inked, It would look much better, I'll try to use ink next time.
