Scrownchy V.S. Buffy

Share

July 26, 2018 marked the debut of Scrownchy Kombat here on Newgrounds.

At launch the game only featured "Scrownchy" and 2 player modes. There where no variety of music present in different stages either, only the "Nothing" Stage music played for every stage selected. At the time there where 2 Song created for the game, the menu theme, and the battle theme. Also each players health was easier to go down making each round very fast.

(updates where very necessary)

During the end of November of that same year an update had launched featuring a few tweaks to the game. Some backgrounds had a few extra changes added to them like city introduced background hazards, but not much to make concise difference from how they looked like at launch, other updates featured player names, and a Computer player button to replace the second player. Even with a little polish. It still felt unfinished.

(updates where very necessary again.)

Decemeber came around and I was back at it again with another update up my sleeves. The Christmas Update "a.k.a the current update" Had few major changes to the game. Firstly, Huge improvements to the backgrounds where made. They had different music, colors, and extra backgrounds where added, a nod to a 2017 chirstmas video I created called "christmas worm" made an appearance as a background, you fought on the worm, and it had one hazard. Health Bars where extended to make fights longers, a solo mode featuring 3 modes where added, 1 where you could customize your cursor, 2nd you could experiement with characters on punching bag mode, and the 3rd one wasn't ready yet and was hault till the next update (spoliers alert. It didn't happened.) Last but not least, Buffy was added as a New playable character the Strongest of the small cast of characters. But even the bold can be out beaten. With that in mind the stage selected added the feature to switch characters, and that was it, even with all those changes in mind, the game still felt unpolished. soooo.

(another update was very necessary.)

it took a span of 5 months of development tweaks to get the game to look how it is now. But there was another update planned for the year after, that was going to expand on what the christmas update had, a planned character with a staff was indevelopment and 2 new stages where added. But suddenly development stopped in favor of other new game ideas which didn't make the light.

What state is the game and series is in now?

In a very questionable period. The game has been out for more than 4 years now, and has probably not seen recent activity during the span of those years sadly.

Will the game or series show something new in the near future?

Yes. Yes it will. The sequel is still on my radar, and I'm thinking of new ways to refresh the game by expanding the knowledge of the previous mechanics. Though with what little the first game had offer, its quite hard to think of what to do next, which is why I struggled trying to develop the sequel. Maybe some light for Scrownchy Kombat may come. Sooner. or later. Who knows, something unexpecting might happen. Until then, my worry is about other ideas I want to approach on.

But all in all If it wasn't for Scrownchy Kombat, my passion for game design and to make games probably wouldn't had a future, or had make me gain a bigger appreciation of flash. It was those 5 months of working on the game that made me felt like I can make or do something even better than before. Every now and then I'd boot up flash to experiment with coding once and awhile so I can one day make another game that has huge impact to me like what Scrownchy Kombat did. For what little did the game produce to the public, it honestly felt like an achievement to me, because I had created a game, that made it past the judgement section and is actually playable with a set goal, that's all that mattered and at the time it was mind blowing. It was something I had struggled to do in the past, that I had actually achieved this time and I will always cherish this game, like it's my son. That goes with every game I make. Each game I make will always have moments I can take away from, and it feels great.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Listen to the song that goes with this scene aswell!
