18" x 24" oil on canvas

"This town is full of monsters! How can you just sit there and eat pizza?!"

Ahoi!

Today, I present 'Alone,' a painting I worked on over the course of roughly two years. While I'm not the best at keeping track of my time spent working on projects, I did manage to keep track of my work on this painting! I spent about 243 hours working on this painting over 53 different sessions. I started the painting on March 21, 2019 and finished it on May 2, 2021. I waited a bit over a month and added some layers of varnish to it as well. As many may know, I did take a brief hiatus from painting in order to finish Dusk of the Madness: Overtime.

This painting is inspired by one of my favorite moments in Silent Hill 2, and is also my third Silent Hill 2 - themed oil painting, after "That Shadow Just Now" and "That Red Pyramid Thing."

The journey that was creating this painting has taught me many lessons- particularly in how black oil paint works. I also started to pick up on differences between the many different types of black paint, such as lamp, midnight, ivory, etc. The first version of this painting was on a slightly smaller canvas, and was pretty disproportionate as I was working with pretty limited reference images. I was able to contact Klaus Kunzt, who uploads many 'Silent Hill Exploration' videos to his Youtube channel. I sent them my sketches and earlier [scrapped] version of the painting, and they were able to not only provide me with a great reference image from the exact angle that I was looking for, but also the measurements of the room and various objects for supercool to-scale accuracy! Huge shoutout to Klaus Kunzt and the Silent Hill Exploration project- I couldn't have done this without them!

I should also mention that it was very difficult to get a decent photo of this painting. I had to give it a little Photoshop love to remove glare and adjust the exposure, but I tried to keep it as close to the original as possible. I'm using my iPhone 6 camera for the time being.

In addition to keeping track of time, I also took progress photos and videos very frequently. I plan on creating a 'making of' video using different clips and photos throughout the process, so stay tuned for that! Meanwhile, enjoy this early sketch, as well as a lil' closeup on that DELICIOUS pizza.
