Hey! To start this decade right, we believe Newgrounds should be ad-free for EVERYONE. For this to work, we need people who have the means to become paying supporters. For just $3 per month or $25 for the year, you can help this happen and get some nice perks!

For the month of February we have disabled ads on all E-M content. We need 218 people to reach our goal of 3,100 active supporters. If we hit that, we'll continue with a new goal in March!

How Color Can Ruin A Picture

Share

This is a prime example of how some pictures should be left well enough alone.

The bitmap I started with was far smaller than what I normally prefer to work with, and I tried a "different" coloring style than what I had been doing for years. Because of this combination, I destroyed some of my favorite line art I've ever done.

Before anyone else mentions it, I am well aware that her breasts look ridiculous - I was trying to go for a very strictly-seamed dress with tucks and darts and other terms only seamstresses know. XD It ended up just looking like she has missile nosecones in her dress. Oh well...

Just remember folks: Sometimes the line work in your art is part of it's strength: The undulation and weight of the lines is what makes it dynamic, and when you remove that, you end up with something flat and lifeless.

The original line art has sharp angles, whereas the colored version is like...a pile of cotton balls. :/

Anyway, this is Dr. Girlfriend from "Venture Bros." in her "Lady Au Pare" outfit, from before she knew The Monarch or Phantom Limb.

In between.

I agree and disagree with your comment about the color/line work. While I think you're right that keeping it just lines keeps a lot of great qualities, I think the color really makes the face stand out that much more. Either way I think it's great.

And sorry to add this to the comment but your PMs are disabled ;).

I also want to thank you for the nice comment on my char coal Elvis drawing :). I greatly enjoyed making it, and my friend was very grateful when I gave it to her.

It's funny that you bring up digital drawing and coloring. You said everyone can do it, well the thing is, I can't :S I feel like I fail miserably at it. It would be wonderful if by chance you could point me to some tutorials. I'd greatly appreciate it.

Anyways, thanks again, I hope you have a wonderful day!

If you want tutorials, I'd say check Deviantart. They've got 'em comin' out the ears. I believe there are also some here on Newgrounds as well - might just take some searching. But, I think even if you just googled "Photoshop coloring tutorials" or even just "digital coloring tutorials", you'd come up with a ton! :3

Wow!

That is just plain awesome. Fantastic.

Yes!

I completely agree. While my artwork may not be anywhere as good as what you've got here, I still have a few pieces that I'm proud of and tried to color once upon a time. Needless to say, crap ensued. Sometimes you just have to take a step back and like your stuff for what it is.

On a side note, Dr. Girlfriend = awesome. Venture Bros. is an amazing show, lol.
