Catharine Sweets

Age: 28 (DOB – April 25th)

Height: 5’6”

African French American

Orientation: Lesbian

Knows: English, French, and ancient Latin.

Appearance: Wears glasses for nearsightedness. Her eyes are brown, but they turn green when her magic flares up heavily. Her hair color is originally light brown, with an orange hue to it. She later has it dyed blonde because she likes it. The choker she wears functions as a magic suppression tool. Her mana is harder to detect, and technology doesn’t sort out when she stands near it. She can still cast magic with it on, but it does limit her capabilities. Which has acted as a kind of weight that had made her magic extremely potent when it’s removed.

Personality: Inquisitive, Kind, Compassionate, Patient, and Empathetic. Likes to help people. But isn’t a wall flower. Catharine likes people and is good at dealing with them. Catharine is fiercely loyal to her friends and will get in anyone’s face who disrespects them. Developing a bit of a stern/stoic persona when dealing with difficult or disrespectful people. She hates feeling isolated and has a mild case of monophobia: a fear of abandonment.

History: Catharine was born in New York but spent a good chunk of her youth in France until she was 13 when her magic finally manifested. Where she was raised and trained by Her Grandmother and the Blackwater coven.

Her Grandmother, Malinda, was known as the witch of the woods and was one of the most powerful witches in the world. Having been alive for roughly 200 years. However, she was married to a human, George, and had a son named Marcus, Catharine’s father. Men rarely develop magical abilities and with him having a human father, made him even less likely to develop abilities. While he was aware of the supernatural, he wasn’t bothered by not having powers. He lived a relatively normal life and worked hard in the world of business. He founded a successful trade company that had major dealings with France, having fallen in love with its countryside and shores. Wanting to give his parents a more comfortable life.

During his time abroad, he met his future wife and Catharine’s Mother Elyna, who worked as an archeologist. However, their meeting was orchestrated by Elyna. Her being a part of a group called the circle. An ancient order of mages looking to secure more powerful magic for their own means. Since he was the child of the famous witch of the woods, they knew that his child could have amazing magical potential. Unbeknownst to Marcus, half of Malinda’s magic had transferred to him after she had given birth to him, and she started to age more than she previously had. Elyna had proven herself to be the best candidate and played the long game of gaining his trust and winning his affections.

Magic usually manifests in children around the ages of 5 or 6. However, Catharine’s magic didn’t manifest until she was a teenager. She was with her father at one of his warehouses accepting a shipment of books and promised her an early copy. However, there was a malfunction and one of the straps carrying the shipment snapped. A torrent of hardback books fell upon them, and Marcus pushed Catharine out of the way to avoid being crushed. But the books fell perfectly around him as Catharine controlled their fall trajectory to avoid him.

Shortly after that, Marcus called his mother and told her what had happened. Then telling Elyna, who had been waiting for this day, but was still playing the part of an unknowing human. She told the circle, and they informed her that Malinda also knew and that she had to bring Catharine to them to avoid being brought into a coven so they could harness her. This led to a confrontation where Elyna attacked and nearly killing Marcus. Tapping into her protective instinct, Catharine tapped into her own vast amount of magic and used every book in her house to subdue her mother and make a getaway with her father.

When they arrived back in Dunbar, Catharine’s father and Grandmother explained what was happening to her and what the circle was. It was a lot to take in and Catharine realized that her life would never be the same or normal ever again. She hated that she couldn’t get too close to people outside of the supernatural. Always having to keep a distance between herself and others. If people found out about her magic, it could cause many problems.

When Catharine met Jennifer for the first time. She thought the Albino was interesting but could also sense that there was something different about her. Besides her obvious albinism. It was revealed shortly after their meeting that Jennifer could sense the supernatural and paranormal. She was very surprised to meet someone non-magical to have such an ability, but she was happy to meet someone who she might share and confide in. The two of them become friends over their love of literature, and their shared secret.

When Catharine started college, she immediately knew she wanted to become a Librarian. It was a normal quiet carrier that would allow her to help people. However, being part of the coven meant she would also have to slip her time between her studies and helping to maintain the supernatural order. Which was less then Ideal, but she still complied.

During her time in college, Jennifer was put in a state of academic limbo. While her Albino friend was trying to decide on what to do next. Catharine suggested that Jennifer become a private/paranormal investigator. Since she had the skill, drive, and even supernatural sight. It would still allow her to do what she wanted. Catharine admitted that the suggestion was partially to wanting Jennifer’s help in dealing with such matters. But she did honestly feel like it was fitting work for her.

Magic: The power to warp and reshape reality to one’s will. A spell caster’s magic is mainly dictated by their linage. However, it can be molded and reshaped by their personality to better suit them. Provided they readily practice.

Catharine inherited her magic from her grandmother, who was known the witch of the woods. A grand master of earth magic. When Catharine’s magic became active, it first manifested with her being able to control paper. Catharine’s time growing up in the modern world, love of books, and her wanting to become a librarian influenced and shaped how her magic has developed.

  • Can charge paper with her magic to create talismans. (Functioning as: traps, location beacons, alarms, seals, exorcise charms, barriers, communication, etc.)

Catharine uses a grimoire as her spell casting focus. It contains information on supernatural beings, phenomena, and laws. But also, information on rituals that require precise instructions. But the most impressive thing about the grimoire is that it can amply her power nearly tenfold.

Even though Grimoires are one of the most powerful focuses to use. Hardly anyone uses them for how heavy, cumbersome, and conspicuous they are. But also, the amount of time and effort is needed to master using one. Many prefer to use smaller and more subtle items as their catalyst to perform magic. Such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, canes, or even piercings. If someone wanted to use magic outside of their wheelhouse, they would just use a simple enchanted item to let them do it. Some people even carry wands around if they want something with a bit more kick. Staves are rarely used outside of combat magic.
