Memories of Better Times

Share

Man am I one a drawing spree tonight.

Actually I like to still hang on to a lot of my memories from when played Pokemon seriously.
Funny story, this one time when I was in 6th grade I had my game-boy pocket in, well, my pocket when suddenly during class everyone, including me, started hearing this funny music. Turns out that I moved just right to accidentally turn on my game-boy.
Man those were the times.
Back then I used to have a friend who I always competed with in games. you name it. Chess, Pokemon, Super Smash Brothers, Turok, you name it, everything. But despite our rivalry, we were the best of friends.
It was because of him that I got in to art, and you know how it is whit friends and art. if there good you strive to be better.
Well Time has taken it's toll on us, and we drifted apart. We haven't spoken to one another in almost 6 years. I saw him at a Walmart once, but it was just a friendly smile and nod.
If I got the chance, I would like to take him out for a drink some time. You know, just two old friends chatting about life and how fucked up it is getting drunk off cheap beer and whiskey. I wonder if he would be proud of me now that I an professional artist.
This is for him, "thanks man, I will never forget you."

I still cling to those memories since they were a good time for me. There are some times that I wish I could go back, but there is a saying "you can never go home again..." and believe me, it's true

An interesting piece

Simple in the presentation, effective in the finished product. I think that there is a lot to be said for your expanses of white in this piece, with only the pokeball being the focus of attention. I know that some people really did have an infatuation with this game which quite passed me by. These things happen, but you've quantified it with a good anecdote, which is how people go about winning things like the turner prize. They waffle on about something that hasn't required much effort and people think that they are absolute genius in this medium.

Personally, I think that it's a decent copy of the original, but you could have made a better effort with two areas:

1) Colouring. Outside of the outline of the ball, there appears to be a mark of red past the thick black outline at around 2 on a clock face. When there is very little else to look at, this will become glaringly obvious.

2) The shadow needs to be longer and more rounded - you'd end up with more of an elipse shape, surely, but this is a matter of opinion, as it is really difficult to determine where the light source emanates from, with only that shadow and the light spot on the ball to go by. Taking those two, I would have said somewhere toward the top right of the shot, thus giving a longer shadow.

With little else to see in the image, it is a good replica of a concept that has been around and done its time, but I would have liked to see more from this in the way of a background or some action. Perhaps the ball should be gathering dust?

Kinsei responds:

actually gathering dust would probably be a very nice effect... I wonder if there is a easy way to achieve the look in Photoshop. I'll hunt up a tut on it.

And your right about my little story, it shouldn't affect how people see this piece or vote/review on it. And I think the dust idea would allow me to get the theme of older forgotten items with out the story.

I'm really sorry about the marker bleed on that edge of the pokeball, I guess I should get it in to photoshop and get it out of there. And extending the shadow shouldn't be too hard....

Thanks for the honest review, these harsher ones are the most helpful.

As Haggard said...

...Not sweet memories for me. Every time I saw Pokémon on the telly, I quickly switched to another channel. That doesn't mean I don't know what a Pokeball looks like, though :P.

The colour scheme is exactly like the one of a Pokéball, and I really liked the lighting you did. When it comes to the shading, I think that the Pokéball's shade should be a little bigger, but other than that, really good shading.

As for the Pokéball itself, as Haggard said, next to the white shine, there's a small part where the red skips the outline. Other than that, I can't complain about the Pokéball. Maybe you could add a Pokémon background or something, instead of just a simplistic Pokéball at the bottom of an oversized canvas.

Well, this is probably one of the smallest reviews I've ever written since I joined the Review Request Club, but there isn't much to say about this :P. Just work on making the canvas smaller, adding a background, maybe making the shade a little bigger and fixing that tiny nitpick that Haggard suggested. Keep up the great work, and sorry for any typoes; I'm in a hurry and didn't have time to proofread the review :\.

Kinsei responds:

Thanks Supersteph,
As I said to Haggard, it doesn't have to be a pokeball, it could have been anything.
As for that little bleed mark up by the highlight, I guess the marker bleed got away from me just a bit.
Also I really wanted some open space and blank background with this, again as I said below. Although if I was going to go back and put in place a background of some sort it would be the fall off of the spotlight.

As good as it could be...

Hello,

I think you nailed the pokeball,
and the placement of the image does stand out quite a bit.

There isn't a flaw I can pick out at all, it's as good as it gets in my books.
That said the reason I'm not giving you a ten is the image is too simplistic,
and fairly easy to do, so I wouldn't feel right giving you anything higher than a 7.

Still nice work though!
Thanks,
- Celx

Kinsei responds:

Thanks Celx,
A simplistic piece was the goal here, so I would guess I landed it well.
I feel good memories of the past can get too cluttered to easily with random complications. So I'm OK with the 7 instead of a 9 or 10.

Sweet memories?

Not for me. Well, I have some sweet memories, but Pokemon isn't one of them. By the time the whole pokemon fad came to my country I was in an age where I felt "too old for this kids' stuff" (you guessed right, I was still pretty young, but tried to act mature ;) ) so I never really got into pokemon.

Anyway, the drawing looks very nice and quite realistic. I was almost tempted to take the ball and throw it. ^^

The light effects on the object are drawn very good and also the shadow looks very realistic. There's a tiny spot just right of the "white light dot" where the red colour crosses the outlines, you may want to fix that.

Also, why such a big canvas for one small object? Maybe you should edit the picture a bit next time so we don't have to stare at a white canvas so much. :P

Kinsei responds:

Thanks for the Review Haggard.
in all Honesty, this was piece was less about the pokeball and more of the memories it instills. and this isn't just for the old pokemon fans out there, but that pokeball could have been anything to anyone. A mushroom to the Mario fan, a ring to the Sonic fan, even a sword to the Zelda fan.
I just wanted to get people to stop for a moment in the fast paced world of the internet and have them think, even just for a second, of times long past.

As for the extra blank canvas, that too plays a strong roll in the piece. With that much left blank I wanted to have a sense of loneliness in the picture. Like things we collected long ago, but now they set all alone, some place, somewhere.

hahaha

I'll tell you what dude, when I read the title and then scrolled down only to see a mear pokeball, that really did bring back some good times dude. Nice background story too. You've officially made my day.

Kinsei responds:

I'm glad that something so simple can have such an impact.
thanks for the 10 my man.
