Jessica Rabbit (WIP)

So recently I've been working on updating an old model of mine. You can see it here: https://www.newgrounds.com/art/view/josilver/jessica-spotted

I've been mainly focused on cleaning up the model and just improving a few things. The original model was made as a mod for a game, Haydee. The game didn't have any facial animation or anything so there was no need for me to rig her face, the eyes were just sheets and the inside of her mouth was non existant. My main goal was to fix that. Make her able to emote, however I wanted to.

With the orginal model there were a lot of compromises I had to make such as the hair being glued to her back and a short dress. One of the biggest challenges was making her look cartoony in a game engine that was ridged and geared strictly towards realism. It wasn't possible to write a shader for the game, all I had were textures and I think the results speak for themselves.

So I returned to the mesh and just wanted to make it better, I rigged and remodeled a few bits here and there and then made the it gave her a toon look in blender cycles, something I've greatly struggled with for a while. I had convinced my self that Blender internal was simply the way to go cell shaded style but I wanted to have her exist in a photo realistic setting and using Blender Internal would make that difficult, I'm glad I persited as I think she looks better now then with anything I was able to do with Blender internal. The problem with Cycles was not so much in getting the cell shaded look but going beyond that but trying to incorperate things that I try to add when drawing such as rim lighting but also doing that in a PBR way and not strictly "faking" it. This was important so that I could plop her in any scene with any lighting set up and get results that work all the time.

I'm still working on her and hope to have something with the complete model soon, problem is I don't have clothes that fit her anymore, and I need to work on that, part of that will be to make her classic long dress.

Jessica looking good! Hope you add some more depth to the eyes, but I like the style otherwise. Smooth and gracious. So different seeing her in 3D like this too...

also, that's a nice looking dra- HOLY SHIT THAT'S CGI!?

Holy fuck that's a model? I thought it was painted until i took a closer look at it, great job!

JoSilver responds:

Thanks. A part of me has always been fascinated with a piece of test footage for a potential roger rabbit squeal done with CGI. I suppose I wanted to out do that just a bit with this.
