Against the advice of the seers and priests in employment of the royal family, the palace had been built upon an ancient burial ground. Nobody exactly knew who was buried there, only that the dead things that lie there weren't human and were once said to be revered as gods by the locals. 


Not long after the palace's completion, a dark, noxious miasma began to rise from the tombs below, seeping through the pale stones of the walls and penetrating the living quarters of the staff and royal family. The stench of a thousand rotting gods was enough to drive anyone who smelled it mad, but those who were posted in the dungeons - closest to the underground necropolis - were doomed to a fate far more grim, as the miasma not only drove them to insanity, but warped and contorted their flesh and bones into something that was no longer recognizable as human...
