A piece I did for a sylvan contest - creatures of the forest - the entire thing is done using watercolour and oil pencilcrayons - this method is very difficult as you cannot layer lighter colours onto darker colours, thus you must work around that handicap. I am also limited by colours, but I do the best I can! I wanted to have a peaceful yet mischievous feel to this piece, wher the background was detailed enough, but not the sole focus - the 3 fae creatures are.

There are also minor fae creatures in this as well - the one on the left looks up at some air sprites that look back at him inside the sunbeam, while a gnome peeks out fro behind his foot. The one on the right lifts his knee up for a fire sprite to rest on, and stands in front of a faerie ring of flowers behind him. The tree root on the bottom right has an earth elemental face on it, slumbering away..

The quality is less on this site for this as it is on my website - as it is for sale and I want the website version to be the focus - you can click and zoom in more on the one on the site.

Those colours look really pretty! I especially like the environment and how it fades to white in the background.

Only thing to improve on is maybe the anatomy of the characters and maybe the balance in your composition (where the characters stand). But overall it's a beautiful piece!

IoTheEternal responds:

the characters are supposed to be in motion - so the one on the left is tensed up with his arms ready to lift as he looks at the sprites in the sunbeam as his clothes billow, the one on the right has his one hand behind his head in a bit of a bashful pose as he raises his leg up for a fire sprite to rest on it, and the one in the middle places her hand against her breast and looks far ahead wistfully as her hair billows around her.

I wanted them all to be in the forefront so they were the main focus and everything else was a backdrop - thanks for the advice though! I drew the characters long ago and only recently filled them in with a scene and coloured them.

thanks for the review!

The character style reminds me of 80s anime. I like it. Sweet background. I LOVE the traditional media. Good depth and detail. Very pleasing color palettes. Really don't have anything negative to say.

IoTheEternal responds:

thanks man - it really hard to draw foliage with pencilcrayons - that's one thing I learned haha..

and yeah I kinda have a thing for that sorta daft-punk like old anime style - been drawing it since highschool :)

this is probably one of my only entirely traditionally done pieces I have ever done - I usually add some cg elements to the finished product but this one is pure traditional media - black outliner, watercolour and oil pencilcrayons. The watercolours work well to blend colours and the oil work well to colour over pencil without smearing it.

thanks for the review!
