At around 3:00 in the morning in my corner of the world, I learned that activist Chow Hang Tung, organizer of the annual candlelight vigils in Hong Kong to commemorate the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre, was arrested.
At the time, the story was only an hour old.
This alone was a terrible thing.
Since then, more people have been arrested for gathering to commemorate this tragedy, and a museum dedicated to this event has been closed.
It is not a crime in Hong Kong to have such events- but it is in mainland China, which will soon celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party.
There is very little someone like me can do.
I am not powerful, or wealthy, nor do I have much influence over anything.
But I can create.
So I have made a candle.
A candle to commemorate those who have died on that day.
A candle to memorialize those who have died in recent years fighting for the democracy they deserve.
A candle to show support to those still suffering under the rule of the CCP today.
A candle that cannot be put out.
