So, Maya is a 20yo Indian indie girl. She is brave and proud who wants to go by her way whatever she wants and does. She doesn't smile often, she is not even emotional, because she had complex moments that her people don't want her to go to what she wants, although she succeeds in going. She hates being used and manipulated by who wants her to stay in one place. And as she says, independence is what depends on everybody's ways and wishes.
