Spectember 2022 Day 4: Fumu's Borb

Share

A newly discovered trench has been found just several miles from the coast of the Float Islands. It holds an exotic ecosystem almost 480 meters form the surface, by far one of the most impressive findings in recent years. Observed here is a predatory fish, possibly a cousin of the Stomiiform order was discovered by renowned marine biologist, Tiffany Fumu, who's research was essential in finding this abyssal wonderland in the first place. It uses a method of suction feeding to capture its prey, ranging from detritus and plankton, to fish almost half its body length. Its more preferred quarry are orange, medium sized fish, possibly of the Sternoptychidae family seen in the background. It uses the red bioluminescent organs below it eyes to locate food in the lightless depths. The large pectorals are believed to aid in locomotion or steering and their red coloration helps the animal remain invisible in its pigment-devoid waters. All specimens observed so far are juvenile males, who measure about eight inches long on average. There are rumors of a yellow subspecies being found in the area, but such statements have yet to be proven. Another baseless claim says the fish are capable of horizontal gene transfer. It's only natural predator is the Clobberbill Penguin (Dedeornis lewisi) which is able to dive deep enough to reach it.
