Kotetsu Jeeg - Haniwa Phantom No.16

Share

Haniwa Phantom Daira was the monster of the week in Ep.16 of the Kotetsu Jeeg anime: it was a massive humanoid with a intimidating physic, from tunes of light to dark of color brown, black joints, with a white head, with a red and grey face and yellow eyes. It was adorn with dark color spikes on its head, lower body and knee joints. Its abilities include super strength, its upper and lower bodies could separate and act independently, as well create a powerful tornado that would suck any enemy into it, allowing it to be crushed by the incoming upper body. Daira is responsible for the destruction of the MechaDon 1, flattening it like a pancake.

The episode starts with Hiroshi suffering a nightmare related to his own essential crisis (for the 100th time in the damn show) as a toy robot berates him about been a cyborg, warning him he has lost his human soul and becoming more of a fighting Machine.

Later he is working on a car when Mayumi comes down with a letter from a pen pal from Okuyama named Saburo Yamanaka, who lives in a now largely abandon village with his Grandfather, Don and Pancho are present to hear from it as well, though Hiroshi walks away before hearing the rest of Saburo's letter: where he reports seeing strange men disappearing into the Earth. The Two goofballs realize these are Jamatai Warriors and take off to Okuyama on their MechaDon. Don and Pancho make it to Okuyama where they meet Saburo and his Grandfather along the way, asking about the Soldiers they saw, though they are given a brief scared by the Gopher who constantly teases them in the series.

At Jamatai Kingdom, Himika shows her Generals her latest Phantom, Daira, who has taken her considerable time and power to complete, though the Phantom's lower body still needs to be finished at this point. Hiroshi and Michi are made aware of the Phantom, and take off, confronting it. Jeeg is assemble and fights the monster, but in the scuffle, he hits the Big Shooter with the Spin Storm, though Michi recovers on time, but the Phantom escapes.

Back at Build Base, Hiroshi is berated by his father for his lack of focus and mood as of late, warning him he would be done for when he faces of a completed Phantom the next time. Hiroshi rides on his back, monologues to himself about never becoming a machine when crashes when he sees a mirage of the Toy robot in his dream. His attention is then turn to a dry flower: Hiroshi realizes that the ground has become a bit hotter and the magnetic field has change, the signs of an impending Earthquake (this may be a side effect of the Chrysalis in him). He informs of this to the Director, Hiroshi and Michi then take off to Okuyama where the latest Magnetic activity is detected.

When they arrive, meeting Saburo who leads them to Don and Pancho, when the two come running from Jamatai Warriors: Amaso, hiding in one of the ruins, throws a sword at Hiroshi, but Saburo pushes him getting himself cut by the weapon. Hiroshi transforms and beats the Soldiers but Amaso escapes. Saburo is then taken at his Grandfather's for care, where he opens up about Mayumi warning him of the Jamatai and the Phantoms, though that he should not worry as Jeeg would resolve their problems, something the boy hopes for, so those that left would return and his village would come to life again, Hiroshi seeing his wall where drawings of Jeeg and a Matsuri festival. Then he begins to realize the amount of harm Himika has brought, when the ground shakes: the heroes run out looking to the top of the mountain, where the lower half of the Phantom rises. Daira arrives and joins with it, becoming whole and the phantom walks down the mountain.

Hiroshi, taking Saburo's courage, decided to fight once more, transforms assembles Jeeg. The two giants fight, but Daira's considerable strength and resilience, makes it impervious to all forms of attack, including Spin Storm, Daira having the edge of Jeeg in the fight. He throws a large boulder at the monster, only for it to separate, the rock landing on top of the lower body and then been crushed.

In that moment the MechaDon enters the fight, firing Bubblegum to its feet, and punches it with no effect. Daira splits up and the lower half releases a tornado that pulls the MechaDon onto it, and with the upper body coming down Don and Pancho jump out of the way on time, but the MechaDon is crushed and Daira throws away the flatten Robot.

Jeeg fires his punches but request the Mach Drills: taking the chance, the monster unleashes a tornado and drags Jeeg into its trap. Daira then comes falling onto him for the finishing move, when at that moment an Earthquake hits and the monster loses its grip, the lower body falls, the upper one crashes into the ground, allowing Jeeg to escape and assembles with the Mach Drills taking flight. The Two halves of Daira corner him from opposite end mid air and dash towards Jeeg: he takes the opportunity to open fire, ripping through the halves with the Mach Drills, Jeeg gets out of the way as these crashed into each other and explode, dispatching Daira.

After the battle, Saburo and his grandfather show gratitude to our heroes, while Don and Pancho head back home, dragging the crushed and permanently destroy MechaDon. As he leave, Hiroshi realizes (at this point I really lost count of his MANY existentialist crisis) the importance he has to the people to continue to fight, destroying the ghost of the Robot from his nightmare.
